An extremely reliable witness with a background in military, prospecting, and survival skills for exploring, came to me with an experience that still visibly shakes him. Like with many practical real-world folks who have an unexplained encounter that defies logic, he still hasn't come to terms with what happened to him on a prospecting trip years ago.
Some forests are so twisted, so confusing, so dark and mysterious that they seem to swallow whole the visitors. If one can discover a way out, it seems a miracle.
So which forests around the world are the most easy to get lost in? Finishing off our "hiding in the forest" theme for the month, let's have a look at the most deadly forests -
Next time you're in the forest, see if you can capture the sinister look of a tree that bends just the right way - is shaped almost human-like, or seems to have a face.
Here's some real creepies -
I'm one of those people that lives for shows like "You Live in a What?" I grew up in an unusual Civil War hospital estate and daydreamed all the time about growing up and building a castle, or maybe converting a church or lighthouse into a home. I didn't want a typical house. When I see videos of eccentric artists with their house decorated in shards of mirrors and mosiacs of tile pieces, I get such joy. To break away from what you're told you should want (nondescript suburban tract house with tan paint), is my greatest dream I want to fulfill while I'm here.
don't want to live in a cookie cutter. I want my own artist-created fantasy abode.
Let's admire the brave folks who live in hobbit houses and tree homes -
Imagine wandering through a forest to find an abandoned building, and then another, and then another.... Woods grow up around abandoned villages. And it is almost tragically magical.

PARAflixx totally gets us supernatural nerds.
Park rangers cover a lot of ground and responsibilities. They can be in very remote areas and camping out. What they run into out in the wilds isn't always your usual bears and raccoons. Oh no, they run into the unexplained or dangerous....
There are plenty of mysteries in the forest, but one that has caught some attention lately is the oddity of abandoned stairways to nowhere....
Here's some intriguing examples -

Inspired by the forest, some artists cannot help taking over the playground to create happy finds for lucky hikers.
Many refer to beautiful but deadly Aokigahara Forest in Japan as "Suicide Forest." In 2003, 105 bodies were found in the forest, exceeding the previous record of 78 in 2002. In 2010, the police recorded more than 200 people having attempted suicide in the forest, of whom 54 completed the act. It's not the #1 place in the world to end one's life, but it is definitely the most mysterious and beautiful location associated with tragedy.
In keeping with the theme of "hiding in the forest," we find our cryptic buddy, Bigfoot has a hobby - building stick structures and rock stacks.
Why do Bigfoot do this?
It's all conjecture and anyone's guess.
My concept is this - we have heard of them keeping their youth near the trees. It is an early practice for them to survive to learn to stay close to a tree. The adults, in supervising the children have been supposedly teaching them games to play with bark to keep them busy. They don't have preschools or daycare, so what do they do? They build a struture to safely house them inside and install a parent to watch and protect. What we might be looking at is "playpens" for baby Bigfoots.
Southern Ontario Bigfoot channel on YouTube has one of the best and widest selections of Bigfoot art gallery of anyone I've seen. Be sure to subscribe!
Here's just some of the beauty -
Everyone has their favorite episodes of "The X-Files," but for me one stands out - "Darkness Falls" (Season 1 episode 20 - see link at bottom of post to buy season 1 which is an amazing season!!!)

Talk about hiding in the woods, movies with this theme are an atmospheric delight full of natural terrors of the unseen and being on someone else's territory that may have a home field advantage.
Light a pine-scented candle and turn down the lights.
Here's some of my favorites of the forest-themed horror movies (I will put a * for the ones I totally adore)
I remember camping in Maryland one time as a kid. I went wandering through the forest away from the campsite. I literally stumbled over a a headstone covered in vines. When I pulled the vines back and realized what it was, I looked up to see other shapes under a canopy of brambles. Nearby, the foundation of a long-ago cabin.
A family graveyard long forgotten? That thought gave me a shiver.
