There are plenty of ghost hunting shows and documentaries to inspire a researcher, but we all enjoy the fictional stories of ghosts. But, what movies might actually have something we can learn from, as well as enjoy for entertainment?
Let's peruse some of my favorite recommendations -
The Stone Tape is a 1971 British movie that is perhaps the single best movie for researchers because it tackles the very real question of -- what records a haunting into a location? Many researchers today carry the concept that granite and sandstone, limestone and quartz can retain events to be replayed as "residual" hauntings. This movie is both entertaining and gets your mind thinking about something as simple as stone being a retaining element.
The Legend of Hell House is a 1973 British film starring Roddy McDowall that dabbles with the concept of a research team entering a horribly haunted estate to test out a machine that can equalize the energy and the spirit that knows to hide in a lead-lined room. Definitely thought provoking, as well as bringing in the question of psychic mental mediums and physical mediums, possession and ghost trickery. In other words, how do we really know what spirit we're dealing with?
The Haunting is a 1963 film that is a classic among ghost stories and also, as a child who was living in a very active home and watched it while sitting in my living room, it is eerily realistic to the types of antics and mayhem ghosts can do, including divide and conquer and pick on the weakest person. The knocks, and chills, subtle touches and tugs are all quite authentic.
Stir of Echoes is a 1999 film starring Kevin Bacon that is rather stunning in its portrayal of latent psychic abilities giving rise. As a psychic, I found it one of the more realistic psychic portrayals and the hints and clues of an unsolved murder awaiting someone to decode it.
The Changeling is a 1980 film starring George C. Scott that gives a brilliant interpretation of a house recalling the sounds of a prior traumatic event as well as chilling EVP session in which the recording plays the voice not heard during a seance. This movie carries the unsolved murder theme to a tense ending.
It's not always easy to get a realistic portrayal of the spirit world from movies that serve to entertain us, but good movies make us think, make us open up our minds, and bring the wonder and the amazement to our attention.
