Ghost Behaviors: Materializing Coins
I am especially intrigued by the strangest behaviors by ghosts, such as poltergeist, shadow people, and one especially vexing playful activity - materializing coins.
When you read amazing accounts of active hauntings, you sometimes hear about falling coins that materialize from nowhere and confuse the observers. Barry Taff, the researcher best known for the Entity Case, reported such incidences, some of them quite extraordinary in amount and persistence. At a recent MUFON lecture I attended, two Navajo Nation speakers told of a haunted location where these coins not only materalized sometimes from 3 feet off the ground, hit the ground, sometimes rolling and bouncing, but always 65 out of 65 times, landing heads up.
Immediately, I can't help noticing the importance of coins to humans and the whimsy necessary to have them land heads up. It almost seems like a purposeful message. But, what is the message, and how does it manage to materialize something so substantial?
What is the meaning of raining coins?
The throwing of coins and rocks are often associated with poltergeist activity. Some believe it is because coins were placed on the eyes of the dead and others believe it's a common way for a ghost to say "hey, I'm here. I'm okay. I made it to the other side."
In "Poltergeist Agents" by Barry Taff, from Continuum
"Another incident took place when Jim and I had to make a stop at my apartment one afternoon in order to pick up some papers. While Jim was waiting for me to gather up my material, some coins came flying at us from my bedroom - although neither of us had entered that area of the flat, nor did I have a large quantity of pennies stored anywhere. The pennies were moving relatively slowly and seemingly directed at Jim. He did little more than smile excitedly in response."
If we're going to make some assumptions, here goes -
coins are small, noisy, and have a personal importance to the living. Seems like an ideal item to manipulate. Conversely, for anyone wanting to hoax, pitching a coin makes noise and is easy to fish from your pocket and toss.
What are your theories?

If only this actually happened. Economy problem? Materializing coins! :D
ReplyDeletethis is fascinating because this is one of the things that happened in our haunted house. we had wood floors through out the house and would hear coins dropping. it sounded as if someone had a handful of coins and just dropped them to the floor. we could even hear the coins rolling on the floor. when my parents would go to investigate, no coins were ever found. this happened on several occasions.
ReplyDeleteYup. Lots of people report hearing the coins drop and finding nothing. Residual recording of a sound from the past? Coins materializing and dematerializing? Lots of intrigue....
ReplyDeletethis is true... i heard coins at my grandma's home all the time as a kid.
ReplyDeleteHere at Stone Manor, we often find that coins have mysteriously materialized behind the couch cushions. ;)
ReplyDeleteLots of odd things drop from the sky. My favorite was what was called "star jelly" in Scotland. DNA couldn't be found in the odd jelly substance.
ReplyDeleteGlad you wrote about this! I've heard stories before of coins dropping or appearing and always thought it was an odd phenomena. If only they would drop 100 dollar bills or gold coins...
ReplyDeleteWhere are those gold doubloons when you need them?
DeleteRecently my dads been finding pennies around our house in places they shouldn't be and it really freaks him out. We've come to the conclusion that his grandfather,my great grandfather, who died last year on 11/11/11. My great grandfather would always pick up pennies if he saw them on the ground and say that he was "a penny richer".
ReplyDeletethis weekend i visited butlins in minehead, i went to the toilet with my friend and nobody else was in there, whilst in the toilet a coin fell between my legs but didnt pass my face, i thought my friend had thrown it over but she said she heard the coin but was over the other side of the toilets my bag was zipped up and i had no pockets , i knew it was paranormal, we had sensed something there and all the photographs that we taken while there wre full of orbs and whilte clouds
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling: it's as if the coin is in another dimension until it hits something. It is obviously dropped/thrown, but you don't see it in mid-air. And it's NOT someone human playing a trick.
DeleteI should clarify: sometimes you do see them in mid-flight/drop, but more often you only see it when it has landed. That was my experience in the house where I saw it happen many times (until the holy water was applied - I'm the poster of the thread below).
DeleteI have not only seen coins materializing and being thrown by unseen hands: I have video of it happening. Pennies were the most common, but also quarters and nickels (for some reason dimes were a rarity). Also, disposable razor blades would fling themselves against the bathroom door from off the shelf, and I have footage of that as well. The coins would often be heard bouncing off the wall before landing on the floor. Two of the residents of the house and I were all hit by coins at different times. Sometimes the coins would simply drop out of thin air, other times they were thrown across the room: but you never saw them in flight, just after they hit something. One coin vanished out of a full glass of beer. The activity died down when one of the residents got fed up and used holy water over every window and doorway. The experience forever changed my outlook on ghosts/poltergeists.
