"Fact or Faked" Interview

Yesterday, I was in on a telephone Q&A with Ben Hansen, Austin Porter, and Lanisha Cole from "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files."  

They start another season April 17th with 12 new episodes.

Ben says the episodes in England where a woman on film disappears from her bed and one episode in Florida where they capture a UFO phenomena, were his favs. He believes they will generate a lot of buzz.

I know, the big question is "Will Autumnforest do tank top shots?" Answer: Yup. The tank top shots began as part of an ongoing joke since the show started about how funny it would be to have a shirt with the name on it and what that might be interpreted as asking.... (answer is "fact")

In Fall 2010, I was lucky enough to have a one-on-one interview with Ben when he was in town. He had some very progressive and exciting ideas for what he'd like to see the show evolve into.

Admittedly, last season I was so disappointed, I wondered if I would watch it again when the new season came on, but I find that there just aren't any other shows like this, so I am giving he new season another go (though I would like a more quirky and personality-filled cast and a few less stupid experiments).




Here's what they had to say:

What can we expect in season 3? They are "expanding horizons" according to Ben. A few cases will push the paranormal limits like superhuman abilities and lots of "funky" cases they cannot categorize. They are going past just bigger explosions to weirder cases.


A followup on Fresno Nightcrawlers? The actual videos that come out now are copycats of it, but nothing new to bring them back to that subject, so no. They do stay in contact and do followup to see if any cases are worth revisiting.

Ben says they will be introducing new things each episode and new ghost hunting equipment. The situation room has changed--something Ben wanted to incorporate touch-screen wall like what CNN uses.  New technology will be used in cryptozoologic cases and such as "crossover technology." Thanks, Ben, for exerting some pressure on taking the show to an updated attitude.

Why? Why? Why?

Rods--Re-ally??? Bugs, solved long ago!

Bad UFO--Re-ally??? U-F-Os?????? `nuff said! I am quite done with UFO episodes. I know Ben is excited by them, but Ben, honey, there are only so many ways to test these and we're are soooooo sick of them all!

This new team member (I'm not bothering to learn her name because they will change the cast around if they make another season) is so posed and spokesmodel'ish that she doesn't fit in with the geeks. She's also overly perky which makes her seem kind of dullwitted since the others are trying to pretend what they're doing is important. The chemistry on the show is shot to hell. None of them seem to blend together at all.

They put a huge fan out in the desert and tossed shit in front of it (likely scenario--just bring me my generator) and then tried hanging a top hat on a fishing line (top hat, really?) and then they got a large Mylar balloon shaped like a spaceship and flew it overhead (remind you of another episode?)

Bugs in a netted tent, lights, camera--rods! Yada yada yada.

Fellas at Syfy--get with the program--totally revamp and make Ben the producer and let him fix this runaway train of tedium and repetition. `Nuff said.

Fact or Faked Reviewed: Season Ender!

I heard FoF was picked up again. (Hence the special celebration pic!)



This season for me was a total clunker. Really bad choices for cases, doing things that they could have disputed without even researching, like glare from glass domes and mating manatees (I could do this show from home with the Internet) and a swingset swinging on its own -- WTF? The only good case they did was the chupacabra. I'm really disappointed. It just got super watered down and in the end they go, "well, we could repeat it so it could be a hoax, but then that doesn't mean it wasn't real, it just means it could or could not have been a hoax..." (hem, haw)

All I gotta say about this episode (it was a season ender??? DT went to Antarctica). How is it possible that the only two times they need someone in a swimsuit for the show, they manage both times to need Jael to do it? What are the odds on a team of 6 people? No Bill in a swimsuit? Chi-Lon, I'd be seriously insulted. You're a more beautiful woman and I suspect you have a much hotter body. So, why you're not posing, ahem, researching in a swimsuit, I don't know, but you should complain for equal rights to bring up the ratings in a shameless manner. (Hey, I'm an expert, just check out my tank top shots)

Now, kiddies, I will tell you my version of a revamp of the show:
Remember "X-Files?" Remember the Lone Gunman? I want a group of eccentric nerds of all shapes, ages, sizes sitting around watching videos--to make it sexy, have them in a basement like good nerds and have giant screen TVs banking a wall. They laugh and dispute the vids and then they go over to their computers and look up all the info online they can to find out that it's faked. Or, they recreate it with their computers. They never leave the dark basement. Maybe even one of their moms brings down some Pizza Rolls for her son's "little friends." That's my rendition of the show and I'm liking it!

The cop dashboard chupacabra was one I had seen way way lots of times online and studied over and over. I was thrilled to see them do that one. It was popular, but then it was also authentically filmed and left some shaking their heads. We want to think it was just a dog, but how the hell did its head look like that??? I had to giggle that they brought in a miniature horse. Oh, those city kids! Still, I find their conclusions as wishy washy as a politician straddling a fence. I was pleased they picked this case, but confused they picked the alien one. WTF?? That was terrible and so CGI looking and ridiculous. There is no way an alien would walk along as people are interviewing and that no one would see it either. Double stupid. Double cheesy looking. One of the critical things on this show is that they pick the right vids to pursue. Oh, how I wish they'd pick more creepy and dark ones. It seems like all their episodes lately are daylight and boring. I am, however, pleased that the cast seems to be interacting more. They seem to be more confident with their premise and purpose.

Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files Reviewed!

Wahoo! New season and, yes, new tank top shots. Answer is still the same--fact!

I have been waiting for this season to start forever! It moved back with GH, probably to save the old show's sagging ratings. So long as they keep it on, I'll watch it when I can get it. I have always said the premise for this show is fantastic, and I hoped that between season 1 and 2, we might see an evolution into something more endearing. Endearing? Well, we fell for Jason and Grant and their Skipper and Gilligan relationship and we fell for Josh Gates and his eccentric bunch of team members. Though I readily admit a monster crush on Ben Hansen (his brains and his looks, people!), I would like to see something that makes me come back week to week. A well-matched team could study a Triscuit cracker for a full hour and we'd be entertained to hear them speculate how they make it so airy and yet so weighty, so woven and yet so fragile. The truth is, they are likely to run into nothing terribly extraordinary, but it is our hope that they run into more scary X-Files like cases and no more mermaid stories or anything like leprechauns and the such.

So, now that their first episode of the new season aired last night, what is your review? I like to have these reviews driven by the readers who watch the show. I very very much want your feedback because the powers that be actually do read blogs and contemplate what the viewers desire. What are the show's strengths? Weaknesses? What do you want more of? What do you want less of? Did they handle the right topics last night in the right manner?

Q&A with Ben and Devin from "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files"

Today, I got to be in on a Q&A teleconference with FoF's Ben Hansen (yes the cutie in the video on the sidebar) and the new tech member on the team, Devin Marble.

They begin their second season on Wednesday the 23rd beside "Ghost Hunters." Expect me to put up my FoF reviews on Thursday mornings along with the expected tank top shots--took new ones for this season!

I had to ask Ben that, after filming 2 seasons now, if his belief in ghosts, Bigfoot or UFOs have changed. He said that ghosts and Bigfoot have not had good photographic evidence, but Bigfoot has had some compelling eyewitness accounts, but UFOs evidence photographically and by witnesses is extremely compelling.

They are excited about the first two cases on the opening episode: Battle LA and Queen Mary. For those who haven't heard of the 1947 battle of LA, here's Wiki description:

The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as The Great Los Angeles Air Raid, is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late February 24 to early February 25, 1942 over Los Angeles, California.[1][2] The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor, and one day after the Bombardment of Ellwood on February 23.

Initially, the target of the aerial barrage was thought to be an attacking force from Japan, but speaking at a press conference shortly afterward, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox called the incident a "false alarm." Newspapers of the time published a number of sensational reports and speculations of a cover-up. A small number of modern-day UFOlogists have suggested the targets were extraterrestrial spacecraft.[3] When documenting the incident in 1983, the U.S. Office of Air Force History attributed the event to a case of "war nerves" likely triggered by a lost weather balloon and exacerbated by stray flares and shell bursts from adjoining batteries.



Devin Marble is a gadget/tech dude and grew up in Tucson. He was into paranormal stuff as a kid. A gadget geek who was excited to chase chupacabra in one of the cases, a creature he heard of a lot growing up in Southern Arizona. He seems like a very open, honest, sweet and very enthusiastic person. He likes to not just come up with ideas outside of the box, he throws the box away. He likes novel and new ways to test and do things.

Cast:
Ben: Investigative and interviewing, law enforcement background.
Devin: Tech specialist.
Austin: Stunts, will do anything physical, an MMA fighter and Ben's roommate right now.
Jael: Investigative, interviewing and interpreter.
Chi-Lan: Photographic specialist
Bill: Scientist, paranormal investigator, ghost gadget designing.

Ben says, NOT DEBUNKING, using scientific method: Their goal--neutral while investigating the outcome, hypothesis, theory, experiments to test theory. They have 3 criteria for a case: Photographic/recorded evidence, eyewitness, way to test it.

Devin finds it exciting to have a giant question mark at the end of a case. He likes when the mystery remains. He's a geek, so he loved the ectoplasm case. If you liked nightcrawlers, there will be an episode this season where you will see something similar to the nightcrawlers in Fresno episode. They might be using a new technology Ben worked on in one of this season's episode.

They really enjoy being able to share some of these cases people didn't know about, like the UFOs over the capital or the Battle of LA occurred. Being able to bring these cases forth is exciting for them and Ben sounds a bit like an excited kid on Xmas Eve when he talks about the UFO cases that are his special favorite.

All in all, these are seriously intelligent, inquisitive nerds and geeks and I feel confident having them work this new season. The subjects sound like they go towards the more intriguing and dark cases and away from the mermaid fluff (thank you Syfy gods!), so I am more hyped about this season. My hopes are really up for them to let out their geeky awkward tendencies so we can adore them like Jaime and Adam on Mythbusters. We trust people who are more endearing to us and real, so I think part of their credibility will be, being themselves.

Keep it up guys! And, Ben, can't wait to see those pretty blue eyes again!

Ben: I Miss You!

You know, I'm a lovable person. I think everyone is a little prize to be opened and cherished, to draw light to their strengths and find their weaknesses endearing. Some people, however, earn a special place in my heart because they have some amazing qualities that show their spot on the evolutionary scale shows promise for the future. Some of those qualities?

Curiosity and intelligence
Humor and ability to laugh at oneself, as well
Saying you'll do something and doing it
Whatever you find yourself doing, doing it 110%

Ben Hansen of "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" on SyFy channel is one such evolutionary divergence that proves we are headed in the right direction. Production companies, editing and cable channel's directives aside, this guy is just there and real and smart and hopeful and earnest and seriously knows his paranormal world. He was not an actor hoping to get a show. He was an investigator hoping to get a sponsor to investigate the big stuff.



Sure, I've had a secret crush on him and am known to put on my Fact or Faked tank top for every review of the show, but then I also do music videos and drinking games for Ghost Adventures, so me showcasing shows I take pleasure in is not unusual.

Still, he is oh so tall and handsome, with that boyish grin and blue eyes. He is funny, smart, a fantastic conversationalist and with such a wide variety of knowledge, can talk about anything.

I was telling him of some episodes I'd love to see them do and he was thinking along the same lines and said they were already developing these ideas. He even knows what us viewers really want to know more about.

I am anxiously awaiting season 2 and hoping that they are into the groove and ready to take it to the next level. I remember not liking Destination Truth the first season and then falling in love halfway through the second season and being addicted by the third season. I am hoping to see the same affliction with FoF and since I liked the first season, I expect it to just get better.

Best of all, I'll get to see Ben again (sigh).

You can expect when the season fires up, I will be doing my reviews of the show the next day with the tank top shots and an honest review. I hold no punches even though I have a crush on the man. I also will no doubt be primed to do some more of my LAUGH episodes (tab at the top of the blog) because that show just makes it so easy with its video reviews. If we're lucky, he will drop in time and again like he did last season and comment with the commenters.

Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files Reviewed & Zombie Walk Contest Winner!

First of all, let's get right to the winner of my zombie walk giveaway. The winner gets to choose which 2-dvd set they would like from these three choices:
"Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" (Romero versions) OR
"28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later" OR
"Shaun of the Dead" and "Zombieland"



They ended the season on Thursday night. It was a good episode. I would rate it much better than the school bus across the railroad tracks episode but not as good as the UFO hoaxer in Washington who pimped his hoaxing video and make a shitload of cash off it and got exposed or the episode with the freaky walking sticks in Fresno. I was not pleased by the moon walk one in the least or the mermaid. There are certain subjects that should not be entertained and I wish, wish, wish they'd pick more dark and spooky videos of ghostly things and Bigfoot and X-file'ish type stuff. I like when they wander in the night. I like when they have to deal with freaky witnesses and sketchy people.

I am very very pleased at how they handled the supposed swampy Bigfoot. Sometimes, I feel like these guys are sort of taking Santa away from us. No one likes the person who debunks. I know that as a ghost hunter. I've had people become downright angry at me when I show them the real-world explanation. I want to see them tackle some ones that they simply are baffled by, excited by how unexplainable it is and maybe even a little ruffled and unsettled.

The cast doesn't seem quite as uncomfortable being filmed. I sort of wish there were more spazes and outright nerds in the group. I think they'd be more endearing if they were a ragtag mix of smart but odd people of all ages and sizes and types. That may sound like just a visual issue but it's also a personality issue. I simply want to see people get grumpy, stick to their ideals, believe with child-like wonder and generally sort of bounce off each other like they've been together too long on the road and are driving each other nuts. In other words, endearing characters. It's not necessary for a show in which the team goes around testing things and debunking, but "Mythbusters" does it and we can't get enough of it or Josh and the gang on "Destination Truth." Nerdish characters really do rule in this particular subgenre as they are less self conscious and don't take themselves too seriously.

Strong Points This First Season:
The beginning when they review videos
Breaking apart into two teams
Interviewing and going into the field to try facsimiles
Reviewing and coming to a conclusion

Needs Next Season:
Video hoaxing--they really could do a lot of these hoaxes with video effects like most guys at home who can't rent helicopters and jet packs.
More dark X-files likes episodes and no more friendly ones like mermaids and the moon.
Consider a cast change--take a couple pretties out, put a couple quirkies in.

Season Two will begin and I will be watching it avidly to see what they change in that time. I didn't like "Destination Truth" the first season, so I'm holding out a lot of hope because I already like FoF the first season. I just feel like it's R-rated when I really want NC-17 (and I'm not talking about sex, although if Ben wants to go shirtless, I will not complain to the sponsors). I'm talking about a lot darker like those really haunting creepy videos on the Internet when you watch them in the dark and don't want to go to bed any time soon. Even if they went to the situation room at nighttime and things were kind of dark outside the room and you felt like they were meeting in some covert hiding spot...

Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files Season Finale! Tomorrow's Zombie Walk

Okay, I'm excited. I will be watching this one excitedly. Here's what SyFy has to say about this season finale for FoF:

The team ventures through the bayou. A baby alligator is found, but they don’t think that can be the culprit of large logs moving near the water. In fear of a much larger cold-blooded creature following close behind the baby, they head back their traps that they originally set out. A monstrous shriek is bellowed from the forest and causes the team to stop in their tracks. Watch the clip and tune in on Thursday at 10/9c on Syfy to find out if they come face-to-face with the creepy noise.

"Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" Moon Walk

I know what you're going to say, that "Mythbusters" did this and other shows and discussed it. I don't even mind that FoF is going to put their own twist on proving the moon walk, but I have to say I'm disappointed this subject was chosen. It smacks of SyFy desperation because that channel is one large dork and dorks have a tendency to think if one action figure doll is good, then a whole bookcase of them is better and a room devoted to them is the best! So, they are pretty simple at getting from point A (making a show) to point B (getting viewers). Hell, look at their original movies!

I want this show to stick with the viral videos and shit that I get in my inbox from well-meaning folks who ask me "is this real???" I wouldn't even mind an urban legend now and again, but the moon walk, really? Okay, said enough.

SyFy is being a gang of dorks on this one.

It's my favorite time of the week, when I get to talk about last night's episode of FoF and give ya'all a little quiz to be sure you were watching.

The Hawaii Ghost Girl and the Australian Mermaid were the cases they chose. I was a bit surprised by the mermaid one. It smacked of SyFy sensationalism. They have a policy to not pursue a case where they can’t interview the witness and they didn’t talk to the guy who took the film. It seemed like they just wanted to film a sensational case and had to bend their rules to do it. I wanted to hear about this dude who filmed it and maybe a voice analysis or Ben doing his badass FBI interrogation maneuvers. I think the ratings posing came across when they put Jael in a happy purple mermaid suit and had her take a dive. That entire portion of this episode to me felt contrived and reminded me too much of that Gene Simmons show where the family just "happens" upon ridiculous situations and tries to react as if it weren't all planned and posed. I admit, I give this one a double thumbs down. It wasn't a real investigation, it was a sweet trip to Australia. However, thumbs up on the CGI rendition of what a mermaid would look like--suddenly she went from being Barbie to a bald wrestler. Ben, honey, that was just the touch I expected from you. You had to bring it back to "let's rest this whole mermaid nonsense." Bless you, cutie!

Next case, the Hawaii Ghost Girl. Jeez, I hope SyFy doesn't mind footing the bill for sending 3 team members and a crew to Hawaii because they looked at some pictures of an obvious braided camera strap in a bunch of family pic's (rolling my eyes). That the culture around them wants to support this finding that she has a guardian angel makes the whole case corrupt. When people have that much vested in a belief, every story they tell will be colored by that. They said the woman reported having no camera strap, but when they borrowed her camera for the shots, it had a camera strap. I think what they were missing in recreating the picture of the girl lying down was that the strap was falling when the picture was taken. Early in ghost hunting, I tested my camera in rain, fog, cold, dust storms, and with all sorts of finger and camera strap scenarios so I would recognize them. It looked very much like that. They didn't go far enough. PEOPLE CAMERA STRAP PICS ALWAYS HAVE A BRAIDED QUALITY BECAUSE CAMERA STRAPS ARE BRAIDED! I'm thrilled they came to that conclusion and only wish they had pulled up the zillions of "vortex" shots people have online to show a typical camera strap pic. (here, I'll google "camera strap vortex"--picture below)



I have to admit, coming off the best episode ever that was dark and spooky and edgy, (the UFO Fraud/Memorial Day Bigfoot) I was very deflated. I'm not entirely sure the cast has any choice in which cases they pursue because this just felt like either they enticed to go to exotic locations or the powers that be chose them and the powers that be have no clue what audiences or investigators want.

The strong points on this episode? The investigators are getting better at talking to each other instead of at each other. Early on, they seemed to just make comments out loud. Now, they seem to debate back and forth; interacting. Bravo!

The weak points? I'm kind of wondering, why do they try to just rig stuff? Why don't they just go right to CGI and do typical photoshop scenarios and use Flash? The typical online viral video hoaxer is going to use these programs and probably not be building models and shit in their backyard. Just saying, seems that you should fight technology with technology, not woodshop.

Ben, baby, I know I'll have something amazing to say about the next episode because it's my favorite--the moon hoax! I had a Republican, right-wing, flag-waving older brother and for years I was his liberal Democrat sister telling him we never really landed on the moon. I didn't believe that, but I liked to see him turn six shades of purple. Sometimes, he'd visit me and the first thing out of his mouth was, "we were on the moon!" I kept the game up with him for years just drive him nuts. It was hilarious coming up with new ways to prove we didn't land there. After a while, I even started to question it.

I know all you followers are going to rip this episode, but sometimes you have to have a clunker. I even forgave X-Files for the lame-o episodes with the whole Mulder and Scully baby/UFO abduction/government conspiracy mess. I just recall the great cryptid episodes and Mulder mulling over what happened to his sister and I feel all warm and fuzzy. Ben, baby, I promise you I feel all warm and fuzzy when I recall the episode of you cornering that UFO nut job. Now, on to the next episode with much enthusiasm!

"Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" Reviewed BINGO!

It got chilly here, so today's shot has a scarf to keep me from getting too nippy.

Well, it's that time again. Time to discuss FoF. I was very excited about this episode purely for the creep factor and not for credibility. My favorite show while it was on was "UFO Hunters" and one of the things I adored about it was how they tackled highly controversial type cases involving government conspiracies and alien visiations. This episode gave me that feeling for sure. Others who saw it emailed me while watching it saying "this is the best one ever!" What's been missing for me has been the creepy factor and they got it with the Fresno walking sticks video and that had people talking a lot and still talking about it. This episode did the same thing. I want it to be more like X-Files cryptid episodes that make your skin crawl.

I think FoF found our viewer G-spot!

First, let me get this off my chest: CABLE CHANNELS QUIT GIVING IT UP THE BUTT TO THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE WEST!!! I had to stay up until midnight to see this entire episode. ARGH!

They picked two stories I wanted to see so badly, I was wiggling in my seat. I must admit, I saw another show do the Memorial Day BF video and they got an athlete and had him run it easily. They basically replicated something every BF lover has seen done on TV already. Still, I can't get enough of investigating my favorite creature of all time, BF! I'm thinking if you're going to run around in a BF costume, you might want to get one that fits. Poor Austin. I'm not so sure of the efficacy of having Bill in a plane circling overhead of potential BF woodlands. Probably just going to scare the big hairy dude away. Verdict: FAKED.

The second case was just plain old weird-o-rama and totally titillating. This man's supposed story of an alien encounter with a creature that killed his dog, a floating UFO, him hitting the killer alien over the head and dragging it back to his home, all made for a fantastic tale. With some prop building, they were able to recreate the UFO and alien and video. Ben decides to go through some further interviewing with this man who profitted from this "encounter." They did voice analysis of Ben's one-on-one with this supposed witness and he tells the man he's not being truthful with him. Awesome Ben! (I do so owe you a kiss, cutie pie!) They found his statements to be false through voice analysis. VERDICT: Faked!

All I can say, is please keep it up guys; go creepy and uncover hoaxes. I feel like a proud mama watching her babies learn to walk and then run!

Tonight's "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" SyFy

The team tries to walk through a video with the man who filmed the unexplained. A scene set among evergreens in the forest causes the man to feel immediate sickness and pressure when coming in contact with an unknown creature. Everything that happens leaves the man lost for logic.

"Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" Reviewed

Hey, everyone! It's that time again. Review of last night's FoF.

I want to toss this at you: Tell me what you liked and what you didn't like. I'll begin.

Didn't like: I have to say, as an investigator, the supposed ghost film was really a clinker for me. My biggest problem was with their comparison split screen with their IR footage of one of the team walking by in the setting. When they put these up together side by side, the original footage was taken with someone's cheap-o camera, is fuzzy, grainy, and miserable. Then, they put their nice expensive IR camera footage next to it and it was crisp and clear. They should have used the original equipment or equivalent. Kind of amateurish. As well, they should have requested the original team who filmed it give them their footage from the night and see if they might have had a short pudgy member there that night.

Liked: I like that they do try out everything the armchair dude at home is going to toss out there. Some of it is ridiculous, but you know someone is going to say, "but did you try (blank)?" So, they do it. Kudos for covering all the bases, even if hiring a noisy helicopter to be a silent UFO seems ridiculous to the members. They have to dance a fine line. I appreciate the wide audience they must accommodate, not all of them as sophisticated as ya'all.
