Ghost Lovers Gifts

Over the ensuing days, I'll be having gift ideas for UFO lovers, Bigfoot lovers and Zombie lovers for Xmas gifting. Today, it's Ghost Hunting.

Julie and I's Paranormal Geeks shop has lots of geek logos on hundreds of items.

Make your guests wonder if your place is haunted? Perhaps a shower curtain to make them ponder it.

If you want to make a gift, you might try doing a ghost mirror for them. For the cost of printing some black and white pictures (I found a picture of Victorian era kids and took Phothoshop and clone stamped black where their eyes were), a glass frame you can get very cheap at a second hand store (remove the ugly picture in it) and a couple cans of looking glass spray paint, black paint, ivory paint and crackle medium, you can do this like I did -

How about a badass Italian Plague Mask?

Vintage creepy baby doll

Radio Show Tonight

Tonight I'm on Super Unknown at 11 pm EST (8 pm Pacific). Please jump on and listen while you're chilling in the evening if you want to hear about all things paranormal.

New URBEX trip!

Julie and I went on a crazy road trip yesterday. It was a reward for working so hard on our Paranormal Geeks book the day before. We got punchy the night before, put the book away, had a couple drinks and began to find the movie "Legend of Boggy Creek" too funny - especially the "woman" with a mustache and the young boys going into the bottoms -

We planned to revisit some spots we've photographed before, but what a day of dead ends and total weirdness!  We stopped at the Slaughterhouse, the site we used for our book "Zombie Housewives of the Apocalypse."  When we arrived, we found a squatter who turned our slaughterhouse into a desert pirate ship with a skull and crossbones flag!

We headed over to a motel we enjoyed photographing a year ago. Well, guess what? It was fenced in now.

We then headed over to one of our favorite abandoned sites, the Domes. When we arrived, there was a van load of folks and a car pulled up. It was the owner of the property. He promptly told us that the site was for rent for $300 a day. Hmm..... So, we considered the possibility of doing a large group of ghost hunters to go there in the afternoon, have a pot luck picnic, photograph, perhaps have some folks play music inside the weird structures that create an intense echo effect, and then have a ghost hunt after hours.

So, we headed down to a place we really enjoyed photographing in the past, Picacho. It had a slew of old 1950s motels that were abandoned, a few homes, a junkyard, a church, and a post office. When we took the turn off, we were stunned. We saw the sign... but no buildings anywhere. It was a fairly wide spread area of dozens of buildings. We asked someone in the gift shop down the road. The entire town was taken down. WTF??? Strange signs posted by the Department of Transportation said it was their private land now. Hmm...

I did manage to add a new ring to my collection because, well, it was just sooooo me!!!

Well, we did manage to get some great photos of abandoned trailers--we run into them everywhere!

The downtown area had some interesting distractions that felt like the 1950s

I also was very productive. I chopped down my Christmas tree for this year. Okay, okay, I kicked it up.

I took it home..

And am starting to decorate the tumbleweed with cheesy Arizona roadside tourist trinket stuff.

Finding Bigfoot Reviewed

Last night, the team went to Vermont to a location where a photo of a supposed Bigfoot and her baby were taken in an apple orchard. The photo was very interesting. It did appear to be a Bigfoot and perhaps its baby beneath it holding on with its little hands. An orchard would become a very attractive place to get food and they are definitely known to depend on human agricultural food sources, even dumpsters behind shops near woods.

The show wasn't as goofy as last week. I was compelling after I had just watched "Legend of Boggy Creek" the other night and their interactions reminded me of those. It's not a super reported place for Bigfoot, but there is really no reason BF wouldn't be in Vermont with lots of orchards and agriculture, waterways and berries.

It would appear that Ranae is losing the hope. She doubts witness accounts and rains on the boys' parade.  It is nice to have her playing the voice of skepticism and logic. I do, however, wish that she would soon run into a BF and develop a passion about the subject.

Wasn't a particularly productive show, but like always I enjoyed listening to the witness accounts and seeing a new locale.

Starchild Skull

For those who haven't heard of it, the Starchild Skull is a malformed skull found in a cave in Mexico in the 1930s and dating back 900 years.

Lloyd Pye, the owner of the skull says this is not a child with hydrocephalus condition, but the result of interbreeding between aliens and humans. There are some interesting finds including the size of the eye sockets, the lack of sinuses (or event vestiges of them), the head joins the spine in a completely different fashion than on humans, and the very material the skull appears to be made up of which is more like fingernails than bone with fibrous bits in it.

Experts report it's just a child with hydrocephalus, but the nurse who had acquired the skull after the death of the original finder of it, examined it carefully to find so many differences that were not documented deformities, that she handed it over to Lloyd Pye to figure out what exactly its origins were. The search continues as they work to fund the final DNA results.

 I will keep y'all posted.

Finding Bigfoot Tonight!

Tonight's episode takes us to the beautiful state of Vermont to look for a supposed Bigfoot carrying a baby in an apple orchard.  I feel like there's a punchline for that scenario, I just don't know what it is yet.

I never saw a rave in the woods of Utah coming, so I'm trying to take this lack-of-logic logic and attempt to guess what technique they use this time. I have settled on something involving hoola hoops and pudding cups.

I am certain the gang will not let us down tonight on Animal Planet at 10 pm EST!

Candlelight Tales: The Caped Horseback Rider

Producers and the Paranormal World

The paranormal world is plagued with loads of people both wanting shows and wanting to produce them. With every burgeoning business with potential to make money and fame, there are going to be shysters.

The world of producing shows and documentaries is one of them.

It isn't always just those wanting to promise things and not follow through, but there are also some very unsavory, unstable, and downright messed up people wanting in on the business and a quick buck.

So, how do you protect yourself when you are approached by a supposed producer?

First, take a breath. Some people get all excited that a show's producer is contacting them promising to give you a show or documentary. Ask yourself, "why me?" Not to belittle your experience in the field, but if you aren't well known, haven't had some amazing cases that got publicity, written books, or have a personality that is super well loved in the paranormal world, then this producer is looking for someone he can impress and manipulate, not the next big show personality.

Next, inquire about their website, ask for their card, look them up online. Simple things like their name, their business's name and even googling "John Doe scam." Ask for a list of other projects they have produced and ask if you may speak to past clients.

If things move to the next level, ask for a contract. Have the contract evaluated by legal counsel.

People have encounters with producers that can seem quite dazzling and they are sometimes bigger than life characters and smooth. They know how to make it all sound so great, talk it up with big dreams and sound like they are connected all over the world. Just do your homework. Everyone leaves a path online. They can be found and their sites can be found. How many followers on Twitter and Facebook? What about YouTube? Is their work on there? How many views? Just keep your calm and be logical.

I give this advice because I was tormented by a person who led me to believe he was a producer and a friend. When I needed a short video done, he offered to "help me out" as a friend. Then, ultimately he tried to extort me, held the video for hostage, and was hiding his business behind a relative's name and credit rating, and then went after me viciously like a pit bull with tons of threats and wrath. He was a real psychopath freak and I don't want to see anyone else ever have to deal with this.

I was naive enough to think he was just helping me out as friends do and as I do for all my friends.  In fact, I had already spent over 35 hours of my own time helping him out with PR.  Instead, he held the project hostage. I was smart enough to have him investigated in case he caused further trouble. And have warned others about his existence in the paranormal industry.

Use commonsense and the credo that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Have those around you also in on this interaction so they can give feedback and watch out for you. Never give cash or equipment to the person.

Stay skeptical and stay safe.

Ghost Adventures Drinking Game!

"Creep" (Radiohead song) done by Homeless Mustard

Zak and the Boyz go to Tor House, the home of the American Poet, Robinson Jeffers. I wish I had a punchline for this, but I'm just hoping Zak doesn't try to recite poetry like he did on the Valentine's Day special. If so, I have a drinking game to help with that -

Drinking Game Rules
1.  Stay home.
2.  Take a sip for every "bro," "dude," "man," every time Zak thinks a ghost touched him and every time that Aaron's mouth drops open in horror.

Tonight's drink? For a poet, it seems ale would be most appropriate. Since I am a ginger addict, I'm going for ginger beer!

Modern Horror Movies, Hardcore Porn & Vibrators

Modern horror movies have unfortunately done something to viewers--taken us as far as they can go with desensitizing us. Since we longer jump and cringe at ax murders, then they eviscerated and tortured people. When that newness wore off, they tried gruesome killing after gruesome killing, each more over the top than the last.

The problem is, they no longer hit our horror G-spot.

Like porn and the use of a vibrator, it takes a bit more and more and more to stimulate and eventually, one builds up a tolerance. Horror was never about the killings or the torture so far as it was about the unknown (in other words what they didn't show us, not what they let us see--everything). The real horror is not in witnessing death, but in the not knowing what will happen. If you see a dark room and hear creepy music, your mind fills in the appropriate terror that works on you instead of someone spoon-feeding you your fright.

Our minds are truly the best scriptwriters when it comes to terror, not our eyes.

("Hostel" - Modern Horror Movie)

I don't find movies like "Hostel" or "Saw" scary, only uncomfortable and numbing. Think about it, people are killed off one after another until there is no one to care about and nothing to hope for. You simply watch the slaughter. They create an apathy in the viewer. Even a simpleton moviemaker should know that creating apathy in your viewers is the kiss of death.

How do you do a killing movie and create horror? Let's have a look at this one --

("The Changeling" 1980)

There is hope on the horizon! Some moviemakers have gotten savvy at looking towards the classics for cues on how to totally engage the viewer with lush cinematography, gripping soundtracks, great doses of darkness, unexplained happenings, and haunted characters. Here's two that come to mind and are worthy of the watching - allowing the horror sensation to seep back into our minds and bodies again so we lose that numbed up feeling.

("The Woman in Black" coming in early 2012)

("The Awakening" coming early 2012)

Horror Classics: The Haunting

This 1963 classic ghost story was based on the amazing book by Shirley Jackson "The Haunting of Hill House." Simple premise; a parapsychologist takes a couple of psychics and the heir of the estate to a notoriously haunted home to find out if ghosts are real.  It was directed by Robert Wise, a brilliant moviemaker and was flawlessly portrayed by the talented cast.

With a very modest budget of $1,400,000, Robert Wise proved you could make a truly unsettling and quality horror movie by leaving out the effects. The tension of music, dark setting, building up legends and storytelling, tension, great acting, silence and then sound, filling our minds with anticipation--was cheaper and much much more effective!

The movie, by today's standards, was pretty basic. Yet, it has a lingering haunting effect. There are no over the top insane monsters, CGI effects, grizzly makeup, or ghost rape scenes. It is, quite simply, a very realistic haunting. It might go down in history as the most classic ghost story movie, so if you haven't seen it, please do.

Trivia: The door that looks like it's "breathing" was a rubber door and stage hands pushed on it from behind.  The movie was filmed in England but supposed to be in New England. As Eleanor drives to the location, a sign along the roadway gives the real location away, "Room for Let, Enquire within."

Psychic Healing

Some flamboyant church leaders and others hoping to make a simple business utilizing the power of suggestion and placebo effect, have given spiritual/psychic healing a bad name.

There are many ancient and some newer techniques for body and soul healing. Whether there is efficacy depends on the practitioner and the patient. There must be talent and there must be belief. Sometimes, the simple act of setting aside time to purposefully focus on healing is enough to make the body's mechanisms engage. We don't usually allow ourselves to focus on our own body and mind and spirit without interruption. The outcome is almost always a peaceful one.

Here's just some techniques used -

Remote healing:  Performed by the healer from a long distance away through meditation and visualization.
Reiki: Involves transferring energy from the healer using the palms of the hands.
Crystals: Apply crystals to sites on the body, often used in chakra alignments.
Chakra alignment: Aligning the energy meridians in 7 points in the body, called the Chakras.
Meridians/acupuncture/acupressure: Utilizing needles or hand pressure on energy meridians in the body to realign or balance the energy centers.
Prayer:  In recent studies found to be rather effective, even if the person doesn't know prayer is being done for him.
Massage:  Used a great deal for those who have been abused in some way to help them reown parts of their body they have cut off their awareness of, to help integrate the person into his body.
Sound: Utilized to create deeper relaxation.
Colors:  Color therapy is used with lights but also in advising the patient to go home and surround herself with these colors to promote certain aspects of personality, aura, chakras that need enhancing.
EMDR Eye movement/desensitization/reprocessing therapy:  A therapy utilizing study of eye movements, reliving of traumatic events through storytelling and then checking to see if the person has integrated it by watching eye movements again after session.

There might come a time you decide to work with a healer. It's always best if you know someone who is pleased with their healer. References are good. As well, if you can get in to see them and talk to them first, ask about their training, years doing it, and technique. Look around. If they have lots of vitamins an other items for sale, back away. There is going to be lots of secondary expenses when they convince you that you need pockets or rocks or loads of supplements. You can also ask if they have the ability to do remote healing and ask if they can make a connection with you at a predesigned time. See if you feel it. Find out if there is a connection. It can be easy to be lulled into belief when someone has a nonthreatening look, a soft voice, pretty music playing, incense and such, but really feel her energy. Does she seem to emanate energy or seem weak and frail? Look the person in her eyes and gauge her soul. Follow your instincts, but also be cautious of those who want to tell you that you need a certain "package" of sessions or peripheral purchases.

Good luck and happy healing!

Ancient Aliens Show

I may tease my darling Giorgio from "Ancient Aliens," I am a HUGE fan of the show. When they have marathons of it on History Channel, I cannot change the channel!! I own seasons of it and play it all the time in the background while I'm writing, stop and listen and get enchanted and then try to focus on my work again.

The concept is simple and made famous by Erich von Daniken in his book Chariots of the Gods; man was visited by aliens, perhaps even colonizing this planet, creating lots of hints in ancient structures and artwork to show we have not always been alone here. I'm a theories gal. I love love love the concept of sitting around with smart minds, discussing "what if"?

The show interviews some pretty brilliant minds with some fascinating theories. One of my favorites is David Hatcher Childress. He has written some awesome books--you simply must check them out. He doesn't just study things, he literally goes all over the world and into the trenches, talking to the witnesses, hiking to the sites, spending time there, digesting what he comes across to form some pretty awesome concepts.

It's on Friday nights on History Channel at 10 pm EST.  You owe it to your inquisitive self to enjoy it!

Shadow People

Honestly, I don't think the paranormal community does enough about this phenomena. It intrigues me so much that I incorporated into my book on Kindle "Josiah: Undead Cowboy."

Shadow people are a very odd phenomena with lots of theories. Here's the most typical features:

1. They can be seen anywhere, new home, old home, haunted, not haunted, park, public building.
2. They are first seen usually out of the corner of one's eye. When the viewer turns his head, he might see it whiz off or he might watch it a few moments before the shadow person perceives being seen and then startles and disappears.
3. They sometimes come with feelings of dread and doom to the viewer that is palpable, not just a fear reaction, but a sense of something bad about to happen.
4. They are often times seen as 3-4 feet tall, human shaped, completely opaque black as if they have mass. Sometimes, they are seen as tall and slender and are sometimes even reported with a top hat.

INTERDIMENSIONAL? What if they are interdimensional and are used to being in our space, but when they see that we know they're there, they freak out and leave. It's like they're used to being unseen. Why are we sometimes catching glimpses of them? Perhaps modern day human eyes are changing. There are theories that fast refreshing screens on computers and TVs are making our eyes trained for things they hadn't been before looking at things in a natural world outdoors.

HARBINGERS? What if shadowpeople are harbingers? The first time I ever heard of the phenomena was at a SciFi convention I was speaking out. A Native American woman said, "I was in a hospital when I saw a little person who looked like a shadow. It was all black and not defined. It peered around the corner at me and a few times I saw it cross my room. I worried it might mean I was going to die." My son and his friend had a lengthy encounter with one in a graveyard. Others report them showing up in their homes during marital troubles and family issues. Are these terrestrial mothmen? Hmm...

DEMONIC/NONCORPOREAL? This one is bantered around a lot. I have a lot of issues with this concept, the main one being, nothing freaking bad happens when they show up. If they don't want to be seen, you'd think a noncorporeal (a being that has never inhabited a human body) or a demon would be sharp enough not to be seen. They'd also manage to get their job done. When they show up, they'd do the dirty deed (whatever that dirty deed demons and noncorporeals are believed to do).

These continue to surprise us, especially because there is no particular place or person they show themselves for. It can happen to any of us, at any time. I have encountered adult-sized ones and one short one. The short one showed up during a ghost hunt and lined up with physical things that occurred at the time. It was like a prankster. The adult-sized ones I saw were the classic ones that as I looked up at them, they just disappeared mid step. The ones in my childhood home, seemed to follow the same path each time and had a "heaviness" to them as if they were a man in a black ink skin tight body suit. They seemed to have dimension. My son and his friend saw one in a graveyard and when he shined his camera's target light at it, it was solid, sat on the surface of the black shadow person and then it darted behind a 3-foot tall altar, only for them to find out the altar was attached to the wall!

All we know that these things have in common is that they can appear to anyone, anywhere, not particularly haunted locations, they don't seem to be malicious, though their appearance can be quite unsettling, and they bring with them often a feeling of doom or dread and when they realize they are being seen, they rush away. So, it would seem that we are being watched by something that does not like for us to know they are watching.

And that makes me even more curious about them.

On the Radio Tonight

I'm on the radio tonight on parachallenged radio at 8 pm EST to talk paranormal. Have a listen in.

All Types of Strange Earth Lights

When I was a kid, we had a Victorian style home on the Chesapeake as our summer place. It was a quiet inlet in the Mobjack Bay area and right across from a cemetery. I would look out the window at night and watch occasionally a strange phenomena, blue ball lights. They would show up, sometimes or two, perhaps the size of a fist or baseball. They would float and move almost as if directed, dissolve or just blink out, moving between the headstones. I had a sense as a kid that it was yet another part of nature like lightning or thunder. I didn't think it was supernatural. It was the earth doing what it does when conditions are right in a swampy land. It did, however, make me positively obsessed with seeing more earth lights and the earth puts out a huge menagerie - just check these out -
Earth Lights/Ghost Lights:  Usually seen repeatedly over time in locations, these lights are described by many as hovering, floating, brightly luminescent, fizzling out, disappearing rapidly, and their origins vague. Brown Mountain Lights and Marfa Lights are most widely known, but this phenomenon shows up in my locations around the world.

(MARFA LIGHTS, TEXAS)

Will-O'-the-Wisp:  A ghostly light seen by people at night, usually over bogs and swamps that has a ghostly glow.  In folklore, it is associated with elemental spirits carrying lanterns.

St. Elmo's Fire:  This weather condition creates a coronal discharge from a sharp object with a strong electrical field in the atmosphere. It creates a bright blue or violet fire-looking glow and is accompanied by a buzzing or hissing sound. Some sailors have regarded it as a bad sign or omen.

Ball Lightning:  An atmospheric electrical phenomenon that creates a sphere that is from pea-sized to a meter across and happens during thunderstorms. This traveling intense light ball is said to explode and leave behind the odor of sulfur. A 1500s account said, "There entered in at the west window of the church a dark unproportioned thing about the bigness of a football, and went along the wall on the pulpit side; and suddenly it seemed to break with no less sound than if a hundred cannons had been discharged at once; and therewithal came a most violent storm and tempest of lightning and thunder as if the church had been full of fire."

Earthquake Lights:  A luminous phenomena seen in the sky before seismic activity including earthquakes and volcano eruptions.  It is an aurora with a whitish, bluish tone and upon occasion even more colors.

(EARTHQUAKE LIGHTS 30 MINS BEFORE CHINA QUAKE)

Northern Lights/Aurora borealis:  Near the earth's magnetic poles, highly charged electrons from solar winds interact with earth's atmosphere, putting on quite the light show.

Jets and Sprites:  Only recently documented (1989), these emissions in upper atmosphere during thunderstorms shows a kind of upward storm discharge that is brilliant to watch from high-flying aircraft.

All of these phenomena remind us how little we know about the Earth's powers and capabilities, magnetic, atmospheric, seismic, geologic, gaseous, and electrical. When you consider how many possible conditions can exist for these phenomena, you can expand that to your understanding of the paranormal world of study.

Yes, quite the puzzle, Mother Earth.

Bigfoot Diaries: Are We Psychic?

A lot of folks assume that Bigfoot is either an alien creature, an alien pet, an interdimensional being or perhaps psychic. We've been reported to have nightvision, infrasound, and the ability to disappear right before your eyes. I won't profess to which of these are true, but I will tell you that we don't read your minds. We really don't want to know what's going on in there.

You might, however, wonder why we're so adept at staying hidden from you. We can credit our keen ability to hear you (you're noisy folks), and to feel your presence. We have secret methods, I won't reveal to you, but they do not involve mesmerizing or controlling your thoughts. Let's just leave it at this; we don't need to be psychic to avoid you, we have spent many generations being keenly aware of how to remain "other."

You hairless ones have quite the egos to assume that we must have super powers to remain cloaked from you. Truth is, any time you are in the woods, you pass by dozens of snakes, owls, racoons, squirrels, birds, insects, and other fauna that you don't even realize it.

That part about man being self aware is true. He is excessively aware of his self. But, Bigfoot is aware of all the creatures.

Skinwalker Ranch

Referred to as "Skinwalker Ranch," this location in Northeast Utah became infamous for a wide variety of unusual "portal-like" phenomena. One of my favorite nonfiction paranormal books, "Hunt For the Skinwalker" was based on this location and the supposed studies that went on for years there to determine what was occurring at this ranch.

A family living at the ranch reported everything from shapeshifting creatures, werewolf-type beings, Bigfoot, poltergeist activity, UFOs, strange lights, portals with Bigfoot climbing out of them, and more.  As farfetched as some of these claims may sound, there is something that hits a note for anyone who has come across such phenomena. There are also some regions of the country where these "portals" seem to pop up and disappear over time.

Here's an eerie passage from a section of the book where "researchers" were studying the property.

"As Mike brought the binoculars to his eyes, Jim heard the sharp sucking in of breath. Jim could see that the light was now more than a food wide and was still growing larger. This very obviously was not a reflection. The dirty yellow expanding light seemed to be positioned just above the ground, rather than directly on the ground, but Jim could not be sure. "It's a tunnel, not just a light." Mike whispered. Jim ignored his partner's growing agitation as he increased the length of the time exposures to forty, then fifty seconds. Mike was now standing up. "Jesus Christ." Mike said hoarsely, "Something's in the tunnel!"

Jim looked carefully at the light below. It had now expanded to more than two feet. Something that big should definitely register on his film. "Oh my God," Mike said suddenly thoroughly frightened. "There is a black creature climbing out. I see his head." Jim felt alarm. His companion was plainly bordering on panic.

"It has no face," whispered Mike. "Oh my God. It just climbed out."

This site had such a wide variety of weirdness that it will go down in history as a term almost interchangeable with strange happenings. Did it really happen? Unless you were there, you cannot know for sure, but you have the option of listening to the evidence and believing. Belief and knowledge--two different things.

My take on this is one of curiosity. There seem to be other such weird portals of activity cropping up all over the country and then dying out over time. So, what are we dealing with? Does the Earth itself provide some either hallucinogenic effects with the right geology, do small stories told become huge legends in rural settings or is there something manipulative and with unclear intentions.

I hope y'all go and research some of these locations of weirdness, especially the Skinwalker Ranch. The book (link above) is one of my very fav's in this genre.
