Highway 666

US 491, formerly US 666, passes through each of the 4-corner states; AZ, NM, CO, UT area.  Although the number came about by usual highway number methods, many were frightened by the "sign of the beast" number 666. Tales began to circulate about it being the Devil's Highway and a higher than usual amount of deaths occurring there. Statistically it was found to be a little behind most US highways. And, as something is always forbidden, people were stealing the signs right and left. Renumbering the highway was in order.

At the dedication of the new highway name, George Blue Horse, a Navajo medicine man, performed a ceremony to remove the curse from the highway. In the Navajo language he stated, "The road itself never ends. It goes on generation to generation. The new number is a good one. The new road will be a medicine."

From one of my favorite book series (you need to get the book for the USA or for your state) - Weird US, comes this -

Linda Dunning, author of “Specters in Doorways: The History and Hauntings of Utah” tells of an experience her husband had on this treacherous road. He was driving alone on Route 666 one night when suddenly “he saw a truck that looked like it was on fire heading straight for him, right down the middle of the highway. The truck was going so fast that sparks were flying up off the wheels and flames were coming from the smokestack.” He estimated that the truck was traveling 130 miles an hour. He pulled off the road and fled into the desert until the imposing, flaming vehicle passed him by.

According to Linda the mad trucker is not the only apparition one should be wary of while traversing this cursed ribbon of asphalt. She says “Packs of demon dogs have been seen on this highway as well. They attack at night with yellow eyes and sharp teeth; shredding the tires of those silly enough to stop along this highway at night. Then there is a beautiful, young and frail girl in a long nightgown that roams the road. People see her walking along the side of the road, all alone in the dark out in the middle of nowhere. They stop to help her and as they approach, she instantly vanishes. There are many other tales of people who either disappear along this route or suddenly appear out of nowhere. There are even tales of the same person, disappearing at one point along the highway and then reappearing at another location miles away, without having any recollection of where they have been or what they have been doing.

One legend of a ghost involves a little girl in a white gown with a sad look upon her face. She shows up along the roadside and drivers are compelled to stop. She apparently vanishes as soon as they approach.  Another legend involves "Satan's Sedan," a car that shows up on full moon at night. It appears to run right into the person's car, but vanishes, sometimes causing the driver to swerve off the roadway. Yet another involves a truck driver who apparently drives at stranded people and cars on the road, terrorizing them. The Hounds of Hell are often reported in this area, a group of wild angry dogs that apparently can keep up with even the fastest cars. Disappearances without explanations are also talked of in association with Highway 666. Even weirder, they are reported to show up in other states and places, hours, days, weeks later, not recalling what happened. The most talked about section of the highway is near Gallup, New Mexico in Shiprock.

Highway 666 might be relegated to the urban legend category. The reasoning behind the fear seems to stem from the number 666.  There is something in the paranormal world that is extremely prevalent - that belief colors perception; if you believe in demons, you can encounter them, if you believe in protection spells, they work. And, if you believe 666 is evil, evil things would happen there on the Devil's Highway.

There doesn't seem to be higher incidence of issues on that highway but it is a rather remote stretch of desert and that is likely to unsettle anyone not used to such gauntlets. There may not be any ghosts of Highway 666 other than the normal weirdness associated with places where few dare go and when they do go, they ride as fast and harried as they can get finish it without falling asleep.

Therein lies the issue - lack of sleep and monotomy.

I do hope to hit that highway and do a little documentary some time. I will definitely let you know what weirdness I encounter. I'm curious if it feels any different than the lonely roads in Arizona. For now, I'm very intrigued by the stories and the mystique. A haunted highway is, after all, a really creepy concept.

Conspiracy Theory Tuesday: Barcodes

This is a new Tuesday series. We're going to focus on some lesser-known conspiracy theories.

From this site:

Some conspiracy theorists have proposed that barcodes are really intended to serve as means of control by a putative world government, or that they are Satanic in intent.

Mary Stewart Relfe claims in "The New Money System 666" that barcodes secretly encode the number 666 - the Biblical "Number of the Beast".

This theory has been adopted by other fringe figures such as the "oracle" Sollog, who refuses to label any of his books with barcodes on the grounds that "any type of computer numbering systems MANDATED by any government or business is part of the PROPHECY of the BEAST controlling you."

(from) Mary Stewart Relfe, The New Money System 666, 1982

"The Prophet John identified this Cashless System of Commerce 1900 years ago as one in which business would be transacted with a 'Mark' and a Number; the Mark will obviously be a Bar Code; the Number will be '666;' the combination of the two, about which you will read in this book, will be an integral part of the '666 System'. . .

RECEIVING OF ONE'S OWN VOLITION THE MARK (BRAND) IN THE RIGHT HAND OR FOREHEAD; which I believe will be a Bar Code facsimile incorporating a concealed use of '666,' unintelligible to the eye,. . ." Mary Stewart Relfe, The New Money System 666, 1982, pp. xii, 206)

So, what do you think? Are we headed for hell?

Weird and Freaky: America's Pride

Something about springtime gets me in the mood to hit the open road. Thankfully, it’ll be in the 80s next week and I’m heading out into the desert with my gal pals. It had me thinking about some of the freak attractions on roadsides. I hope to get shots of some that we run into. Here’s some to cover just about every nook and cranny of the US. Makes you want to set out with the family and look for the largest ball of twine or such… (for more ideas, try this awesome site)

ALABAMA: Anniston, AL. World’s largest chair (since Pat Robertson is the world’s largest ass, I’m thinking it might be his seat). 625 Noble St.

ARIZONA:
When I first move to Arizona, I remember the trip along I-10 that crosses the country. There were billboards occasionally reminding us of “The Thing! Mystery of the Desert” and how many miles until “The Thing!” I couldn’t wait to find out what “The Thing” was. At a quaint old western antique shop outside of Tucson in a little shed there sat a glass enclosed coffin with, well, something that appeared to be mummified (no doubt paper maiche), but it was ghastly exciting! 2631 N Johnson Rd, Dragoon, AZ (I-10 exit 322, south side.)

CALIFORNIA: In California, as you’re driving I-10 from Arizona to LA, you run into some life-sized dinosaurs in Cabazon. You probably remember them if you saw the awesome movie “Pee-Wee Herman’s Big Adventure.”

MICHIGAN:
Alpena, MI: Giant Paul Bunyan made of car parts. 666 Johnson St., Alpena, MI

NEW YORK: Ashland, NY: Replica of the Partridge Family Bus. Route 23 West in Ashland NY. It is such a one-horse town, you really can't miss it.

OHIO: Akron, OH: Indian head. A giant sculpture of an Indian head cut into a tree. Sand Run Park & Fairlawn Grade School. Exit 136 off I-77, head east(toward Akron) on Akron-Medina Rd (aka SR 18). You will pass a SuperKmart on your right. Follow SR 18 (aka West Market), past Summit Mall on your left, many stores on both sides of the road, over the railroad tracks. The elementary school with the ugly Indian head is a couple minutes further east on the left hand side of the road.

OREGON: Alfalfa, OR: The Shoe Tree. A tree festooned with loads of shoes. Apparently, as kids leave for college, they leave a pair of shoes on the tree as a symbolism for hitting the road. East of Alfalfa (east of Bend) on Willard Road before it turns south.

PENNSYLVANIA: Atloona, PA (by the way, this town seems to have a lot of weird stuff). The America’s oldest rollercoaster built in 1902. 700 Park Ave.

SOUTH CAROLINA:
Bowman, SC: UFO Welcome Center.

TEXAS:
Amarillo, Texas: Cadillac Ranch. It houses 10 graffiti-covered Cadillacs buried nose down in the dirt. In a cow pasture along eastbound I-40 between exits 60 and 62. Exit onto the frontage road, then enter the pasture through an unlocked gate. Visitors are encouraged.

Outdoor Ghosts: Outdoor Hauntings

Gettysburg on a hot dry evening

We hear a lot about ghosts within buildings, held to the sentimentality of the structure, remaining in the site in which they died. What we don’t hear quite as often are outdoor ghosts.

Ghost Intimacy: Seriously??

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve talked about incubus and succubus and how the human body hits states of arousal during sleep and that's where the demon sex dreams come from, but out of curiosity, I wondered what people were saying about ghost sex and found out the Internet is filled with really bizarre and perverse ghost sex stuff. So much so, I just had to post it cause, you know, I’m weird that way--always curious. Also, I thought it might amuse you. I shit you not, this stuff is what people are saying out there…

Found these two entries in the urban dictionary:

A daring sexual maneuver where a man and woman begin having sex in the doggy style position. While the man is pleasing his woman, his friend comes out of the closet quietly behind them. The first man acts like he is adjusting while his friend takes his place. Making sure the female is facing the window, the first man runs outside and waves at her while his friend is giving it to her from behind. Guaranteed to make her look like she has seen a ghost.

(Sounds like a tag-team three-way to me)

The strange phenomena that has emerged over the last few years wherein young, mostly black urban boys film themselves humping and grinding against empty furniture, the floor, etc.

(Perhaps they’re just filming to check their technique?)

Oh, and here’s what one site says and I won’t even say what site cause I can’t believe this person believes this, but here goes…

When a person dies only his physical body ceases to exist. His subtle ghost body (consisting of the subconscious mind, intellect, ego and soul, i.e. minus the physical body) however continues to exist and moves on to the other regions of the universe. Or into someone else's body through the Vagina in woman or the Anus in men.

Often a womb infested with a ghost is that of the ghost of loved ones, or to those of strangers, and the worst case possible Devils and Demons. Any woman's womb can attract many different forms of a paranormal haunting at least that is the common belief amongst many. And so can men. The ghost that haunt men are often found living in their genitals, bowels or stomach. And the number of ghosts or demons and devil's that can infect a person is said to be uncountable.

Dead Lovers and Husbands are notorious for inhabiting a woman's womb. Usually they do this just to keep the woman they loved from finding another suitor. Or to be born again as that women's new born child.

These very malevolent ghosts and sometimes demon often show up in ghost photos with their heads or faces exposed peering from the haunted woman's vaginal or lower stomach or crotch area.

Sometimes good Spirits of the dead father of a child will enter a womb or anus just to protect his child from other ghosts.

There is a camp of people who believe that this is why women should not ghost hunt or venture into haunted locations unless they protect them selves from womb ghost and demonic intrusions. One rule is to never ghost hunt when you are horny.

(Okay, apparently I should never go ghost hunting cause according to that last sentence, I am always in a state of being vulnerable to “attack.” Please, I hope the womb and not the anus!)

So, how does one get a ghost to have sex with him/her?

As anything else online, I found this adorable spell. Now, before you berate me for giving people instructions on how to attract a sex demon, do keep in mind that this spell is simply someone’s made up idea of what would attract a sex demon. It is neither clinically proven nor acceptable logic, but it is a helluva funny spell…

The incubus (male) and succubus (female) are legendary night demons who engage in lascivious sexual activity with men and women, usually during sleep.

Ingredients: (sounds like the ingredients for a wild sex night to me)

red wine (or purple grape juice)
lime juice
walnut shells
goosedown pillow
piece of black leather or black lace or black satin
almond oil
black and red licorice sticks

Cabalistic legend says that Lilith was born out of the k'lifot, the shells. K'lifot can refer to any shell or covering, as in the skull that covers the brain or a shell that covers a nut or an egg. The foreskin is considered a form of k'lifot.

Use a walnut shell to attract the tantric lovers of the night. If you want to attract the male of the species, place a small strip of banana peel inside the shell. The incubi and succubi are also attracted to blood. You can use purple grape juice or red wine as a substitute. Place five drops of red wine into the shell. Squeeze five drops of lime juice into the shell for power and influence. Lay the walnut shell on top of a piece of leather or leather garment if you want the sex to be rough. Lay it on lace or silk if you want the sex to be gentle and tender. Make sure the walnut shell is sitting as an open bowl, or you trap the incubus or succubus when they arrive. Meditate on the little shell bowl and open your mind to the experience. Place your pinkies into the shell and then dab the outer corners of your eyelids. Rub your left big toe with almond oil. It is said that these sexy devils often enter the body through the big toe. Almond oil will attract them and help you to open up your sexual and psychic centers.

Scriptures warn against sleeping naked because it attract incubi and succubi. Sleep naked. Close your eyes and lay your head on a pillow of goosedown. Lilith and her consorts love all feathered things, and goosedown assists with communication on the astral. Begin to think sexy thoughts as you chew on a piece of black or red licorice. Red is for sex. Black is for naughtiness. Licorice stimulates the yin centers and makes us open and receptive to sexual gratification. Count to 666 (the number of the beast) and drift off to sleep. Your dream lover will not enter until you are sound asleep. Of course, some people do not remember their dreams. It would be a shame to forget this strictly taboo encounter after you've gone to all this trouble. Here is a spell to remember your dreams so that you can recall what transpired in the night and then brag to all your friends the next day. (Sex demons don't mind if you kiss and tell). Before you lay your head on the pillow, drink half a glass of water. The moment you wake up, drink the other half to remember your sweet and sexy dream.

(*WARNING: No sleeping people were harmed in the making of this post*)

Creepy Legends From the Southwestern US

Today, let's take a walk on the weird side. The Southwest has some tales that only this barren area could produce. Enjoy!
