I had my own puzzling and unexpected encounter with a Bigfoot in the Sierras in the mid 80s. There was no internet and really all I knew at the time was the Patterson film I saw as a kid in a theater before a movie was shown. I figured two things - they are only in Washington forests and they are apes. My moment of witnessing one made me realize that both of these assumptions were totally false.
