There's something remote, bleak, and spooky about farms and countryside. Perhaps it's being cut off from civilization or maybe because the land is old and haunted. Maybe it's those who want to hide from the world might be lurking there. Generations of horror add up in a family homestead. The plows tilling the earth dig up secrets. Here's some of my faves -
The Witch
In 1630, a family eeks out a life on a rustic farm, but soon dynamics in one of the daughters causes the family to pull apart with fear of witchcraft. This is the most beautifully executed horror film. Definitely worth the watch!
The Blair Witch Project
Three college students decide to go film the woods in Maryland where there is a legend of a nasty witch haunting it. They get caught up in hysteria and the pull of evil within the forest. For a docudrama style, it's nicely executed. It definitely takes you into the forest in fall.
Something Evil
This is one of Steven Spielberg's first films. A family moves into the countryside to escape New York crowding, only to find they are wrestling with something demonic. This has a nice New England vibe and creepy crawly suspense with notable actors.
Children of the Corn
A young couple travels through corn country only to find they are going in a circle, always coming back to this one spooky town that has no adults monitoring it. Nicely acted, truly creepy, and an autumn must watch!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
A family of psychopaths in the Texas countryside take advantage of some youths traveling through. If you're okay with gore and torture, this is your film.
The Village
It seems like an idyllic rural community from a past era, but it's surrounded by a forest with a mythical monster that keeps them in cheque. Beautiful autumnal setting, great acting by notable actors. Twist ending.
The Happening
A science teacher is caught up in a world gone mad where people are killing themselves right and left. In order to leave the kill zone, he and his wife and friends trek out into the countryside only to find that the trees are what's causing the issue.
The Strangers
A vacationing couple at a cabin are taken hostage by a mask-wearing group of killers. To its credit, the masks, and the creepy old time music makes it unsettling.
The Conjuring
Based on the infamous evil-chasing couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren working a case at a Pennsylvania farm. I'll admit, I still haven't seen this, but I am not a fan of Ed and Lorraine, so I already don't like it.
Wrong Turn
Youths make a mistake by taking a shortcut through the West Virginia mountains only to break down and need help. The only help to be found is an inbred family of psychopaths. This is a very tense film, seems like something that could actually occur. Definitely turned me off nowhere roads.
Wind Chill
A couple of college kids drive home for Christmas through a mountain pass, get stuck as temperatures drop, and are surrounded by some kind of haunting element. This is a good suspense movie and really creepy. Nice storytelling.
The Dark and the Wicked
A family in a rural farmhouse watch their patriarch waning as a threatening evil surrounds them. I haven't seen this one, so no comment, but I have it on my radar as I love horror that happens in isolated areas.
Night of the Living Dead
A group of strangers descend on a farmhouse in Maryland when the world becomes overtaken by zombies. This is a classic, well acted, well thought out, well portrayed. Definitely a must-see.
The Fields
Something in the fields around their farm is terrorizing a family. I am about to watch this one. Sounds like my cup of tea and I love things with scarecrow themes. I'm rather scarecrow obsessed.
Sleepy Hollow
Even though I'm not a fan of Tim Burton raping the classics, this was actually a gorgeous film. It shows that he should have stuck with being an art director. Johnny Depp, as always is a fine Ichabod Crane and there are many notable actors involved. It is a rich and autumnal movie like no other. If you want to be seeped in the autumn creepy theme - this is IT.
The Messengers
A family moves to a North Dakota farm and the children begin to see apparitions and fight off evil attacks while the parents are skeptical about their encounters. This has a nice farmhouse vibe and scarecrow feel.
I'd suggest you make your favorite drink in a mason jar, conjure up some cheddar popcorn, and kick back with a blanket to enjoy these lonely scary treks through horror.
