Don't Be a Dork!

Did you know that there is a new UPC code out there??? It's a 2-dimensional one with interesting potential. QR codes, or quick response codes, have begun popping up all over the place, The code looks like a psychedelic postage stamp but it’s actually a two-dimensional bar code. When consumers scan it with a smart phone reader it will link them to a website, video, social network site or online store so they may find more information on the product. It’s an instant connection to an advertisement or promotion.

You want to hear a modern use for such a thing? A brilliant book made by some smart forward-thinking artists.

"Embedded" by William LeGoullon, Nicholas Dahmann, and Peter Bugg. A book with bar codes throughout can be scanned and a bit of poetry comes up on the cell phone. It interfaces book reading with technology. Brilliant layering of the very things embedded within the code.

Don't forget my giveway--you have until Sunday night!

  1. New? Those QR Codes have been around since 1994.

    (But yes, they're popping up more)

  2. These new phones can put your bar codes on them and you don't have to carry cards. I am wondering how safe they are. It would be cool to scan any item and get more information before buying it. Someday, we will all have bar codes on our bodies. I am opting for my ass, lol.

    Interesting Sis...

  3. Pretty cool. I think it won't hurt to have this new technology in the West.

  4. I saw one on another blogger's page that allowed you to donate to the Japanese relief efforts. Very cool stuff, but the tin foil hat side of me says it has huge potential for abuse.

  6. It's just another way to track what we are doing! One step closer to having a bar code on our FACE, MAN!

  7. I've seen some cool applications for these where you can put them on a shirt and stuff and people can scan it and find you online. Kinda creepy for stalkers chasing you through the crowds with a cell phone...

  9. LW;
    We're tagged like deer in the wild, aren't we? I wonder if anyone can truly ever be anonymous. From the moment you're born and you get a social security number, you're tracked. I freak out because of customized ads. I go anywhere online and I only see ads for the last thing I bought online. Sometimes, it can be a sad reminder of a stupid purchase as if it haunts your forever.
