In the last post, I discussed the depressing lyrics of the early 70s, the social and economic changes, leading us into sex, drugs, rock-n-roll and disco of the late 70s which gave us the energy to burst into the superficial, affluent, productive and insane decade of the 80s. Here's some songs and lyrics that show our thoughts and mood about the 80s...
(“Sussudio” by Phil Collins)
There's a girl that's been on my mind all the time -
sussudio
oho.
Now she don't even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same - sussudio
oho.
Ah
if she called me I'd be there
I'd come running anywhere.
She's all I need
all my life
I feel so good if Ijust say the word - sussudio
Just say the word - oh
sussudio.
Now I know that I'm too young
my love has just begun - sussudio
oho.
Give me a chance
give me a sign
I'll show her anytime - su-sussudio
oho.
Ah
I've got to have her
have her now
I've got to get closer but I don't know how.
She makes me nervous and makes me scared
But I feel so good if I just say the word - sussudio
Just say the word - oh
su-sussudio
oho.
Ah she's all I need
all of my life
I fee'l so good if I just say the word - sussudio
I say the word - oh
su-sussudio
I say the word - oh
sussudio
I'll say the word - oh
su-sussudio
oho.
Just say the word
just
just say the word
Just say the word - su-sussudio
sussudio
sussudio
Sussudio
sussudio
sussudio.
I say the word - sussudio
I say the word -
oh
just say the word.

Is there loving in your eyes all the way.
If I listened to your lies would you say
I'm a man (a man) without conviction,
I'm a man (a man) who doesn't know
how to sell (to sell) a contradiction.
You come and go, you come and go.
Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
you come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
red gold and green, red gold and green.
Didn't hear your wicked words every day
and you used to be so sweet, I heard you say
that my love (my love) was an addiction.
When we cling (we cling) our love is strong.
When you go (you go) you're gone forever.
You string along, you string along.
Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
you come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,
red gold and green, red gold and green.
Every day is like survival (sur-vi-val),
you're my lover (you're my lover), not my rival.
Every day is like survival (sur-vi-val),
you're my lover (you're my lover), not my rival.
I'm a man (a man) without conviction,

Karma karma karma karma karma chameleon,
you come and go, you come and go.
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams,

You come and go....
(“I Wear My Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart)
("Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves)
I used to think maybe you loved me
Now baby I'm sure
And I just can't wait 'till the day
When you knock on the door
Now every time I go for the mailbox
Gotta hold myself down
'Cause I just can't wait
'till you write me your comin' around
(chorus)
I'm walkin' on sunshine, woh-oh
I'm walkin' on sunshine, woh-oh
I'm walkin' on sunshine, woh-oh
And don't it feel good?
Hey, all right now
And don't it feel good?
Hey, yeah
I used to think maybe you loved me
Now I know that it's true
And I don't wanna spend my whole life
Just a waitin' for you
And I don't want you back for the weekend
Not back for a day
I said baby I just want you back
And I want you to stay, oh yeah
(chorus)
Walkin' on sunshine
Walkin' on sunshine
I feel alive
I feel the love
I feel the love
That's really real
I feel alive
I feel the love
I feel the love
That's really real
I'm on sunshine baby oh, oh yeah
I'm on sunshine baby oh

Oh gods, no, NO! I take it all back! I'd rather have the melancholy of the 70s instead of the saccharine of the 80s!

ReplyDeleteYes, I have to admit that it made the early 90s grunge movement look like relief. It was a fun time. I guess I associate it with my carefree days working in a mall and living near the beach. It was just like Katrina and the Waves said, "Walking on Sunshine..."
I don't know...tough call this one. I was born in 73, so I kinda lived through both at a certain age to get the impression. The sappy mournful stuff of the previous post was bad, to be sure. But there were alot of good things happening in the 70's too though. Zeppelin, Chicago, The Doobie Bros., Fleetwood Mac, I could go on and on. And when I compare THESE guys to any of the above 80's artists, it's a different tale.
ReplyDeleteIn the contest of sappy "my dog died" 70's weep-pop and 80's bubblegum...80's bubblegum wins IMHO. But if it's a contest of the bigger 70's bands, I would go bell bottom pants and incense while watching Welcome Back Kotter!
Aaron;True. We got some great metal bands in the 80s that balanced it a bit more. I admit to hating sappy movies and music--I just hate that kind of sentiment. I still at heart am a gal from the 70s who loves her earth and sandals and "American Pie" and England Dan and John Ford Coley, Aerosmith and Ozzy.
ReplyDeleteLove Boy George (not THAT way) and Walkin' On Sunshine is a fantastic song. I'm in the minority--supposedly--because I liked disco...and all those MTV and VH1 songs of the mid 80s with the videos...takes me back...there seemed to be more creativity then...why is every young female singer of today (Brittney, Lady Ga Ga, etc.) trying to be Madonna?
ReplyDeleteTimoteo;
ReplyDeleteI got ya on those points! I admit to loving Sade and the Bangles and that damn Walking on Sunshine is now the biggest ear worm all day. Ever since I watched it when I put it on the post, I have that song playing nonstop in my head. I think I gotta take a break and dance! (Any excuse to dance)
1980's. Blech :P Give me Nox Arcana or Rob Zombie any day over that '80's nonsense!
ReplyDeleteHN;
ReplyDeleteDude, you just had to be there to get it. Didn't you ever see Weird Science? That should put it in a nutshell. In fact, Kelly LeBrock was my idol back then.
Got married and had my kiddies in the 80's. I still love dancing to Karma Chameleon... fun song!
ReplyDelete80's were hot. Those songs came out just in time. So if I am headed to the beach or driving on long trip cross country i still play 80s CD.
ReplyDeleteEcho;
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, but I can remember the ones I heard while hanging out on Manhattan Beach and which ones I heard when I worked in Manhattan Village Mall and Del Amo Malls. It's hilarious how I can actually remember what clothing display I was putting together when one of them was playing--sort of burned into my skull.
There is good music and bad music in every decade. The 80's were more upbeat that the 70's, probably because of all those hippy kids coming of age. (That explains the fashions too!)
ReplyDeleteI also dug some 90's grunge and there are a few artists around today that are tolerable to me, but it seems that the older bands still dominate my listening.
Too much of the new stuff is so American Idol-ish, y'know?
(And Lady Ga-Ga? Gag-Gag!)
