One of thousands of unanswered questions in the field of paranormal research is whether or not a ghost can be attached to an object and continue to “haunt” a favorite chair or bed or other possession.
This is obviously impossible to prove, but there does definitely seem be an association with objects, their location, and activity. People who have recently inherited belongings from deceased relatives often report suddenly having footsteps, sounds, cold spots, and a sense of being watched; all signs of paranormal activity. Under this same cloak of phenomenon, the renovation of a house and changing of its walls and coverings can also seem to release activity.
The question can be broken down even further by asking;
Does a person’s soul attach to an object and continue to stay with it?
Does his lifetime interaction with that object continue to replay somehow?
Does a person's interaction with an object continue, even when they are no longer touching it?
Does a person who has handled an object leave some kind of physical “film” or “imprint” on the object so that their feelings/memories are contained within it?
Does an object in some way pick up the event in an environment and replay it like it is believed certain kinds of stones/geology can hold and replay events?
As someone who does read objects, I know what I receive is a kind of history lesson of people who have used and handled this object, some of them only as briefly as a day. I narrow in not so much on their interaction with the object, but where they are in life when they use the object; ongoing drama, relationships, et cetera. So, as far as my abilities go, I know that objects can carry the “essence” of a person and his/her situation.
The physics of how an object can hold information is elusive. I don’t imagine there are many scientists who wish to risk their research careers studying such things, but I would suppose someone who specializes in quantam physics may be more intrigued by this phenomenon.
I’ve looked closer at objects I’ve read and I must admit that metals/stones/jewelry are easier to read, things like paper, cloth, and wood are tough to read but not impossible. So, all objects apparently have the capacity to record, but some are much more efficient at it. The only commonality I have found thus far is their density. The more dense, the easier to read. I could make a layman's assumption that perhaps if information is contained in the partical material, the more dense it is, the more information it renders.
I don’t think we can conclude anything from my observations so far, but I hope to continue to learn more about the properties of objects and where things might be held and how. Can they be washed away? Can they be worn off? Can they be altered if the object is say a wooden toy whittled down to a toothpick?
I’d love to hear anyone’s input on this subject. It will definitely be in my ongoing research.
I am on here today reading and saw your article and i thought i would tell you the last thing i got from someone who died that had a attachment. My mother had purchased a telephone a few weeks before her death. Well after she died, i used that telephone at her house many times and there was nothing wrong with it. Well i brought it home and the first time i hooked it up it called the last number she dialed, which was 911. Well ever time i tried to use it, it would call 911. So i unhooked it and never used it again. I never doubted for a mintue that it was left over from when she was dying. I also talked to someone recently who said, they did not believe in ghosts, but a few months ago strange things started happening, in their home. They wouldn't tell me what, but i asked if they had inherited or purchased something old from a auction. In a few minutes the woman said, yes right at that time she brought home some things that had belonged to her father. So i do believe there is a attachment to objects the deceased own.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree. It intrigues me to no end. That chair photo with my article--it came from our summer home. It was carved in the 1800s by a sea captain who did woodwork in his spare time. It sat in that house where the woman's voice told me to look out the window. When we sold the summer home and moved the chair up to Fairfax, my mother saw the spirit of the captain who lived down the street from us, sitting in it, about 3/4 his normal size. He had died that morning and she hadn't known it until later in the day when his widow called. I brought it to my house and my brother was always drawn to it. He'd proudly sit in it, even when he was sick and near death. When he passed on, the next Christmas I took a picture of us opening gifts and there was a strange white haze where his head would have been. I felt like he was there at Christmas with us. I do think that as humans we think everything is absolute. Where I end, you begin. Where this desk sits, it only takes up that space. I think there's a lot we don't understand about matter and how very fluid our world is.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog so much Autumnforest-sheesh after the comment you left at my place I wish I could be of more help to this post!! I do wonder if people's psychic or soul imprints are left on favorite objects -I think it is psycometry? where a psychic can supposedly pick up feelings and thoughts of someone's departed spirit from an object -but in my friends and family's lives I can't think of an example-I will ask my folks-as far as I go-I can easily see my spirit "haunting" my favorite books-although I hope not their authors-haha;-) after death. Recently my mom brought up something about this Luger handgun that her father picked up off a dead German soldier in World War One -but not in relation to a haunting -I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open-great comment from Ella-and like I say thanks so much again for your wonderful blog and thoughts-best as always!!
ReplyDeleteHey Devin;
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the article. These are the kinds of things that cross my mind. I'm an extremely logic-minded person and also creative, so it's a weird mix. It makes me think about things from different angles and find ways to test them and prove them. With my ability to read objects, it's something I finally gave in and admitted in recent years. Even I, who am shocked by the things I know, can't explain it. I just know it exists and I can't deny it. So, what's a logic-minded person to do? Find out how this works. It has to be explained by something in the scientific world. I don't think it's paranormal at all. I think it's simply normal, only we haven't figured out how to weigh and measure it yet. As a person who reads objects, however, it intrigues me how much one object can contain and how little others can contain. I once had a friend bring me her boyfriend's leftover fast food wrappers from his dinner to read. Oh brother! That was nearly impossible. She thought since it was "fresh" it would show what he's been up to lately. It ended up the thing that had his most info on it was his watch which he let me read one time. I know when we hold beloved objects from our family, we feel happy memories, but I believe even people who don't work their abilities can still read those objects. It begins with holding it one hand (for a right handed person,it's usually their left) and just either close your eyes, or look off into the distance. Let an emotion come first. Some objects have very strong emotions that are instantaneous. Other objects you have to breathe slowly and let them tell you about themselves. If you want to take in the loving energy of passed relatives, I would suggest you consider holding the object in your left hand and let the love enter you and spread through you. It's a form of "energy vampirism" I suppose, but it works well. :-)
I went to lake Superior today and got some rocks from the lake where all the shipwrecks happened. How do I tel l if they have any attachments?
DeleteInteresting thought since some believe that the artifacts from the Titanic seem to have some ghosts attached. I saw a show where a woman bought an object at an estate sale and after she brought it home she started experiencing paranormal activity. Was it the object? She thought so. I have some items in my home that once belonged to a relative that has long since passed. I haven't noticed anything unusual but I will keep my eyes open.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about logic-minded-most who read at my place would not believe this of me-but I am actually pretty hard-nosed when it comes to "Truth" with a bit T-I have just seen so much and heard so much in my life -all from people I trust implicitly -that I know the Newtonian view of the clockwork universe is wrong-how its wrong I can't say-but consensus reality just doesn't explain everything for me anymore-I consider myself a searcher and seeker instead of a "knower" -again love your blog and I hope you are having a fantastic week!!
ReplyDeleteTry giving some of those objects from relatives a good long hold in your hand. I can almost guarantee you'll either feel serene, sad, uncomfortable, or comforted. That's where it's contained. Sometimes, these things don't seem to affect the entire environment and one of my theories is in my next posting coming out today about Feng Shui.
ReplyDeletei believe that an object can be atteched to a person after he or she dies i use a activated voice recorder from sony to pick up evps in my faterś house my father died 4 years ago and my mother 12 years ago and i used the recorder and got an evp that sounds like someone playing pool the pool table is no longer in the house it was given to someone els it sounded like two people playing pool
ReplyDeleteazorean stormchaser (love that name, btw!)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you're describing a residual haunting. These are a difficult one to define, but my belief is that if an activity is repeated enough in a place, over time, the sounds and sometimes the sights of it are recorded and played back, but not necessarily driven by a ghost, simply caught in a loop to replay over and over again. You see it often in places like hospital corridors and lighthouse stairways where repeated patrolling are done.
It seems like it would not be difficult to conclude that a hammer was in use by a carpenter or that a dildo was used by a prostitute. So I am a bit skeptical of the reading process of objects. However it is obvious to me that people don't really die. Nothing really dies. IT just changes form and such. Conservation of energy in the laws of physics. So the belief that something could attach to an object isn't out of the realms of possibilities to me.
ReplyDeleteJacob;
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you that a good mentalist would have not trouble deducing the origins of most objects by their context. Still, my ability to extract information that is unusual and highly strange from objects leads even my logical self to know that there is some essence left on an object. One time, I was at a party and a man gave me his wedding ring to read. It was a heterosexual singles party. He'd been hitting on my friends all evening. I told him the ring was from a man and then told him it'd been in a junk drawer for months and he just took it out to wear it that night for symbolic reasons. Now, not a reading I wanted to give because my logical brain went "are you insane, that can't be true!" But, it was true. His gay brother gave it to him when he left his marriage. He said it would mean more to him than it had to himself. The brother took it out of a junk drawer where it had been for 8 months and wore it as a symbol that he was okay with his brother's decision. When things like that happen, all my logic goes out the window.
I am able to fell the presents of ghost's.And I have located objects ghost have been able to use to scare family members and myself. I figured out my daughters boyfriend, son was useing his war medals his father wore on his vest, his son died in Iraq and so I talked to him and I told him I felt his energy when the vest was here in my house, and as clear as day he answered back he said yeap.I know that when we die we go to a diffent realm and I don't beleive it is your soul that moves on but your energy, because you can't kill energy, everything has an energy but you are attached somehow to it and you are able to use it to manifest as a mist or apparition. And it can move very fast and go anywhere it wants.I have ghost hunted in our cemetary and have hundreds of orbs with faces of the died inside them I even caught an apparition. And all those ghost hunters on tv,who think orbs are dust or bugs, are just wrong in my opinion they do not use a magnfying glass to look at them. You should inlarge them and look and if you can't see them you were not suppose to I guess.True some are dust and bugs but not all.
ReplyDeleteIf you wish to ask me anything you can send me an e-mail at barbnicholes@yahoo.com ok.Thanks Jacob.
ReplyDeleteMy mother died in 2005 and was newly divorced from my dad. Within the last 2 weeks strange things have been happening at his home. When he came home, A lamp was knocked over and a bottle of juice was laying on the floor. He has two cats and they were spooked. he had recently found a box of my mom's things and found a bible of hers from when she graduated college. He thought it had something to do with recent activity so he put it in the garage in left it there. from then on all the things had stopped. he had also heard his name being called when he was in the bathroom. I told him I would take the bible. Do you think this is possible? I'm not scared to get it but he doesn't want it to happen again.
ReplyDeleteWhat I would suggest in this case, Nicole, especially with it being a Bible, is to take the Bible, get a picture of your mother, perhaps something of hers, a piece of jewelry or clothing and set up a little place for her in your home. A memorial that says she has a place and is honored. The hardest thing about losing a marriage is a feeling of losing home, losing family. If she had a place of memory, there would be a restful feeling of still existing in the mortal plane to those left behind. You can set it up and tell her what she taught you and how her example was, even write it on a paper and slip it into the Bible. You might dream of her for a while, but then it will calm down. It's a way of shifting realities for both of you.
ReplyDeleteHi...wow, you are so right. My dad is sending me the book this week. I will do that. I also had 2 dreams that were on my birthday in right after she died, and I know it was her. It was so vivid and she told me it was alright and she was ok.(she passed very suddenly and unexpected). I totally believe in all of this, and thank you so much!:-)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Nicole. As a woman one year divorced, I know the feeling of disruption of family and loss of home. It's an adrift feeling. To know that your child still harbors all the lessons you taught and leaves a little shrine that says "this is mother's space in our home," is all a mother could ever wish for. I hope the dreams that will come help you both to realize that all the content of your relationship will last you a lifetime. You always know what your mother would say about any decision you are facing. Her voice is inside you. You don't need a lot of years with a loved one to have them influence the rest of your life.
ReplyDeleteI have an issue here. My sister, the one person I cared the most in the world about, committed suicide 5 years ago, and the only thing I have left from her is a ring. Since she was pretty much the only person I had in the world, of course the ring became very priceless to me. Now that my boyfriend and I live together, I place my ring on the nightstand at night and he has bad dreams, were a little girl talks to him. He says her voice isn't creepy, but he knows he shouldn't be able to hear her. He is convinced it is my rings fault. He says when someone takes there own life, their spirit converts to childhood innocence or something like that. Of course I'm not getting rid of my ring. He claims that for the past 2 years since he met me he has periodically had waking dreams that made him feel threatened, as if a bad spirit was hovering over him, but it wasn't until recently that he started having the dreams of the little girl. I personally just think it's his worst fears manifesting themselves through dreams, but he won't let it go at that. Is it possible that my sister could be haunting my boyfriend? I know it might sound ridiculous to ask something such as this, but I have seriously ran out of other options.
ReplyDeleteYour boyfriend's issue is not with the spirit of your sister. As a psychometrist, I can tell you that many of her memories and feelings can be accessed through the ring only by touching them, but not her spirit. Her history is in it, but not her content. What he's experiencing sounds more like some issues in being in a live-in relationship. The chances are that in a safe and stable relationship, issues from the past are coming forth and showing themselves in a theme that he can understand. He also sounds as though he might have some sleep disturbance problems and those can give you some amazingly vivid and horrifying experiences including paralysis while seeing visions. Your problem becomes his belief system and that's a hard to thing to fight. He believes the right is the cause of his issues. I would suggest a little experiment for him. Put the ring in a box on the nightstand instead and then see if anything changes. If it does not, then some night when he doesn't know it, leave the box empty and put the ring somewhere else in another room. If he continues to have these dream issues, then it's time to discuss the cause of the dreams. It's just a guess, but if I were involved with someone whose sibling had killed herself, I would be concerned about caring so much about someone who might have a propensity to do the same. It will be your case to reassure him that your sister's set of circumstances and coping skills are vastly different and then help him compare how different he is from his siblings. Your sister's ring is a precious tie to her and the essence of her is in that metal band. I'm glad you honor that, but I can assure you that she does not haunt the ring in spirit form and is not tormenting your boyfriend. I hope this helps.

ReplyDeleteI recently purchased an antique firearm excited at the prospect of what history it may hold being that its a WWII era rifle and it wasn't until after I fired the rifle and returned home with it that I started having strange dreams of death and awaking to the feeling of being watched. i'm not a superstitis person and don't believe in ghosts but the concept of what I've read here does make me curious as to wether our not I may Have triggered the events, While I don't feel threatened I would like to know if there's anything I can do to stop these dreams and feelings without getting Rid of said rifle as I do feel a strange attachment to it and would be rather sad to see it go
ReplyDeleteAnonymous--I will tell you congratulations on having a psychometric experience. This is what a psychic who can touch objects and reads them has happened. It is not that the object is haunted, but it still contains the memories made by a person who had used it and you are tapping into those. This could be a latent talent. You might find some interesting characteristics, such as you tend to need to put a hand on someone to really get a feel for them, or you pick up items and hold them before buying them and sometimes, put an item back and pick up another one, even though the one you picked up was visually fine. Once you tap into the memories, they do usually become part of your memories, so you can go back in your mind into them and see them as if it's something that happened to you. My advice to a psychometrist is to learn to be observant. You will sense emotions, flashes of images and such from an object, but just sit with it and watch it like it's a movie. Know that, like watching a movie, you can observe someone else's experience without becoming it. You're getting a window of opportunity to see history. So far as the rifle is concerned, so long as you do not hold the rifle, you shouldn't be activating old memories. You can re-record memories onto an item. My favorite way to do this is to sit with the item, holding it while filling my mind with the positive memories and feelings of my life. I try to do this daily for at least a few minutes a day, but you must be very vivid, thinking about people you love, happy situations, feelings of love and tenderness. It can take up to two weeks to really retrain an item, but soon when you go to pick it up, the tones of the object feel different and instead of seeing the bleak images, you feel peace. I hope this helps.
DeleteHello. My great aunt died last month,April. I saw her in February, and she said to me-"Kelly,I've been thinking about you a lot lately." I told her I would come and see her again in May. Within a matter of weeks, she developed dementia, and passed away.My parents brought me some of her things-a fan she had hanging on a wall that they bought her,a fairy that lights up,some stuffed animals I had bought her,a quilt and a blanket that are on my loveseat. The weekend my parents brought her things to me, I had a flare up of carpal tunnel, after doing light yard work. The yard work was simply pulling a few small weeds, which I do all the time. The last time I had to wear my wrist braces was a yr ago, after painting a bathroom, and then they didn't even hurt as bad as they did after my aunts things were brought to my house. I had to wear my braces to bed, on both wrists. One night I went to put my braces on, and couldn't find them.I thought they were somewhere else in the house, and I would find them in the morning. I looked and looked, and never found them. This was a few weeks ago. I've had the braces for over 8 years, and through about 5 moves. Then I had a flashback of my aunt wearing braces on her wrists, so I asked my mom about it, and she said yes, my aunt had surgery more than once on her wrists for Carpal Tunnel. Also, a few weeks back, before I received her belongings, I found one of my credit cards in a file folder, where I had "hidden" it from myself so I wouldn't use it. I remember placing it back in another file folder. Yesterday I went looking for it, and it is nowhere to be found. Is it possible my aunt is "taking or moving" these items? There is no one in my house but my son and I, and I don't believe he moved my braces, and he wouldn't have found the credit card. I'm convinced it's my aunt, but I don't have a reason why she would be doing these things, and I'm beginning to think I'm losing my mind :-)
ReplyDeleteAnything come to mind?
Thanks so much!
Hey Kelly, this is very common. It can happen the first weeks following a loved one's death. I'm not sure why it's done unless it's simply to let you know they made it to the other side and are okay. Some of us need some physical proof and this might just be it for you. It will likely die down soon and quiet, but you will always recall she made an interaction.
DeleteFrom Kat:
ReplyDeleteMy name is Katherine. I saw your post and email address on a Ghost Hunting site.
I am experiencing something that I can not explain. Paranormal activity seems the only logical answer.
I recently bought a new Smart Phone. I didn't want to spend money on a case for it, so I am using a case that I think I bought at a Goodwill store. It is a simple case (about the size of a cell phone) that has two sides, connected in the middle. It just folds over. On one side, it has two straps that are located about 1.5 inches from the top and 1.5 inches from the bottom edge. The other side has two straps located about an inch apart, in the center.
I carry the case in my purse. When I leave my house to go shopping, I slide my cellphone (it is off) on the side where one strap holds the phone on top and the other strap holds the phone on the bottom. Every time, when I retrieve my phone to use it or look at it, it has moved to the other side of the case. Face up, as I had placed it, but on the other side. I would never put my cell on that side as it is not as easy to slide it into and is not as secure.
This has happened in my home and in my car. Yesterday, I kept testing it, looking at it after just a few minutes - sure enough - about 6 times it did this.
Do you have any explanation about this type of activity? I appreciate any comments.
My son can read objects as soon as he touches something he knows all about it, dates and such, Mind you he is 15. He also can recall things from the past, present and future. Objects yes spirits can attach themselves to them and to a person. I have seen 3 spirits myself. What do numbers have to do with my story. Number 3 plays a sufficient role in my life. I was sick 3 weeks. Went to the ER 3 times, The last time was 3 days before a 3 week stay in the 3rd month, I had 3 surgeries, I saw 3 spirits, 3 times, 3 tubes were inserted.this was in 2012. I also keep seeing 7/11. even more interesting.
ReplyDeleteI had a dream my mom was in the hospital 3 days before she died, I spent 7 hours with her it took us 13 hours to get there. I had only been out of her room a total of 3 minutes before she died at 3 pm. this was in the year of 2013, my mom died 3/7/13 3 days before my one year anniversary of my own near death experience when I saw the 3 spirits, 3 people have confirmed including a paranormal investigator that I have a spirit attached to me, I can hear spirits, I can sense and feel their presence, I am able to read people, i have dream and awake premonitions which have come true. I can predict accidents and family members hospital or deaths. I can through dreams know if I am being cheated or lied to. My mom can read minds, see and hear and communicate with the living and dead before she died. My aunt hears spirits, and other family members have these gifts as well.
I have done evp's even without a spirit box or the radio scanner.. I felt the spirit attach itself to me. I have had a poltergeist in my home in which i had paranormal investigators come to my home, missing necklaces from my neck while i was sleeping, and then reappearing, fire being started in which I was burning incense and all of a sudden very secure new bundle tied together incense started bouncing and flying everywhere catching my bed on fire.Pots and pans being thrown at my husband, lights flickering or turning themselves on and off every 3-8 minutes.we just moved in a different house in a different state, Spirit activity is starting to happen the house was built in 1925. The spirits were warning me to take a pot off the stove. I was warming up the house by heating water on the stove. I was doing an evp at the time and replayed it back twice. sure enough i go into the kitchen and the pan busted from being so hot.
A way to look at the world of the "other side" that might help is to consider that everyone that has been, every thing that has happened, shares the same space. This makes it possible to be 3D people moving around within another dimension. Even objects hold the crumbs of information of everyone who has encountered them, every space you inhabit has been and is inhabited by those with more dimension than we possess. So, attachment is perhaps not as accurate a word as co-existing in a space.
DeleteHi - I purchased an vintage bronze trash can from a vendor on Etsy that I love. However when I opened the box it smelled like a dead person. I know that smell vividly because my uncle died in his home and was there for 10 days before being discovered. I was very close to him so although he was there a long time, his death was peaceful and I only feel intense love with his items. So, I know the smell. I cleaned it well and put it in my bathroom. However, I started to hear heavy, slow footsteps coming down the hall near the object toward me. My husband and I heard it together and saw nothing. It doesn't happen much but we never had footsteps in our home before and we have been here since 1989. My husband has also been sick to his stomach since it came on 7/2 and I have moved it out of the home. We are convinced something is attached to this. I do not sense anything negative but my husband does. He previously did not believe in ghosts. Your thoughts? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI hope this helps. What happens is what I call Graveyard Syndrome. People ask, why are graveyards haunted? The dead certainly don't hang around their bodies, do they? Well, they don't. But, what we have is a situation in which someone hasn't thought about the dead in a while, maybe not really finished grieving. They go to the cemetery, sit down and talk to their deceased sister or whatever and they are basically calling them up by focusing on them. This box, in its own way activated memories of a relative who had passed. When you focus on such, you often get it. And, if you do not get that relative, you might get another who slips into that spot created by thinking of the dead, or believing the object is attached somehow to the dead. It's the principle of what you focus on - becomes.I bought a bird cage that reminded me of one I had as a child. Same model. Same color. It had no particulalr spirit feels to it at all or even many memories when I touched it. But, I brought it home and set it up and suddenly, I was recalling that time in my life when a family friend had passed. It was a good time in my childhood and also a sad time. Then, I recalled the dead bird too that died when I was school age. It seemed like since I had this bird cage, odd things were happening in my home. I touched the cage again and nothing. But, I had activated thoughts of those who had gone. When we do EVP sessions as investigators or I do a seance - I am bringing them forward. The box is not so much a beacon but what the box makes you think of creates a connection. I hope that helps. In these cases, I usually advise people to make the case mean something completely new - like propping it open with photos of loved ones or storing love letters in it or something positive - and perhaps some pot pourri so the lingering scent doesn't reactivate that connection in your mind.
DeleteWe live on the main floor of a house and my Son, Daughter in law and 2 small grandchildren live in the basement apartment .we have all recently moved to this location and my son works away quite a bit, my daughter in law has been feeling someone watching her when she is in the bedroom, something cold breathing on her and something prodding her leg, her Mom is visiting and she too feels something doing all the above and something sitting on the bed.
ReplyDeletewhen she told me this I had goosebumps because the bed they have used to be mine and I too experienced the same thing. The mattress was new but bought in England where there are stories of stores buying old mattresses and having them recovered.
We have been trying to figure out for months why this started happening to her yet nothing on our floor and the only common denominator is the mattress.
my 2 year old grandson wakes up every night around 2.30am crying and pointing asking 'what's that' and sometimes toys start to play when no one is in the room and my daughter in law feels like it's a very bad male presence...any ideas?
I always lean toward conservative solutions at first. I would advise someone try sleeping in the room on the floor or change the mattress with another one in the home and see if the issues continue. Put the mattress in another room, see if issues happen in that room. Narrow it down first if it's the mattress or the room.
DeleteI can not enter a antique shop or museum or any place with significant history without getting sick, or having strange things happen to me on the premisis or afterwards in my own home. I am dŕawn to such places yet become sick to my stomach when i go through museums or antique shops. I can get flashes of faces or energy (good or bad) from certain objects.
