Tonight's episode, "Hard Target" was described as -
while drilling in the mesa, the team discovers something that could be out of this world.
The episode opened with Thomas monitoring the borehole drilling operation. Archaeologist Chris Roberts was busy going through the drilling spoils. He noted a low-flying plane over the ranch. It apparently had no identifying transmitter signalling.
Once again, the drill hit something hard inside the mesa and the beacon for the drilling unit was giving off inaccurate info. Travis mentioned that he had surveillance cameras set up around his trailer and somehow the data was sent somewhere else. The only way it could happen was for someone to be inside his trailer as it's not hooked to any internet. Whoever did this, also logged out the cameras. They realized that someone/something is spying on them. Devices could have been dropped from low-flying planes. The technology involved is highly sophisticated.
At the drilling site, they ran into another problem. They hit something so hard, it took a couple hours to go just 60-something inches. They cleaned off the drill bit after withdrawing it and it still had its teeth. They thought it was a smooth toothless tip that was fighting something hard.
Ben Woodruff, the biologist, came to review trail cam footage. He showed tons of wild turkeys, a coyote, and elk. An elk seemed to have some kind of boils on its face, or burn marks. Ben suggests getting plant samples of the environment there.
Part of the team went to look for potential radiation and the other part of the team monitored the drill site. Ben found unusual plant growth and decided to get soil samples and plant samples inside and outside a well-defined area of strange stunted growth.
The next morning, the drillers let the team know they repeatedly ran into hard spots, losing drill bit teeth. They had to reinstall the drill bit. They put 15,000 pounds of pressure on the hard spot and nothing, not even heat rising from drilling on impenetrable metal. The only thing that wouldn't heat up is a heat-resistant ceramic.
Ben Woodruff had video conference about the plants they tested near the drill site. Comparing the golden aster plant outside of the slow growth area and inside, you can see healthy plants outside the focus area and the focus area plants grew unhealthy like that of exposure to radiation.
Later that night, at the drill site they worked hard to get through the hard thing. Chris Roberts continued to go through drilling spoils. During drilling, 1.6 GHz started up again. They pondered if this was caused by the drill hitting something in the mesa. At the same time, the drilling beacon signal was spreading out all over the place.
Chris Roberts showed ceramics that came out of the spoils. They were glazed on one side and porous on the other side, crosshatching. It was manufactured. This came over 400 feet into the mesa. It is like the space shuttle tiles. I have to wonder why they don't take a piece of the ceramic and apply heat or even a hand drill to test it. They tested for radioactivity and it is giving off high levels of radiation. They decide to study the ceramic under a microscope.
My take -
I ponder the metal and ceramic being manufactured. If it were just a meteorite, it makes no sense. But, to me, it makes no sense an alien culture would use such "rustic" metal and ceramic like we use for going in and out of the atmosphere. It appears that is not a concern for them, as it seems they utilize some alteration of the atmosphere around it to go in and out of objects and ocean without a glitch. So, what could it be? My thought is rather out there, but also kind of makes the most sense. What's in the mesa is the crash of a time traveling human vehicle. It was here when there was heavy plant material (late Pleistocene?) there, burning the plants and being buried with the rock. A future vehicle utilized the qualities of the area to travel time and crashed into an ancient landscape where the mesa is. (cue the Planet of the Apes music)
