What to Do on a Dark and Stormy Night

Nothing like a dark and stormy night to give you the atmosphere and mood to stoke the fires of mystery. Even if your power isn't out, just turn out the lights in the house and let the lightning illuminate the creepiest corners -

Whether you use kerosene, batteries, or a candle, a hurricane lantern (or a dozen) are the best nighttime mood enhancers ever. Head down the hallway in your dark home carrying a lantern and see how different your world feels. Light pulsates as delicate as silent heat lightning.

Spooky movies that are ideal for a dark and stormy night -

The Haunting
Dead Silence
The Woman in Black
The Amityville Horror
Poltergeist
The Changeling

A candlelight supper with lightning flashing outside is a dream. Surprise your loved one, family, or just enjoy it alone like a sullen author with writer's block.

Add the right music too -

Want some entertainment? How about telling scary stories by candlelight or shadow puppets on the wall?

If it's not a stormy night, make it one -

Or simply play this on the TV -

Amp up the romance and have appetizers and wine by candelabra light -

Go for ornate wine glasses and really put on the gothic vibe -

A charcuterie tray for cheeses, figs, grapes, salami, etc -

Enjoy the atmosphere, maybe even dress for the occasion -

Halloween-themed possibilities -

With Halloween season upon us, it might be an ideal evening event to embrace the atmosphere.

Create a blanket fort with some sheets or blankets and pillows to watch some spooky movies.

Carve a pumpkin and light it with a candle inside.

Open all the curtains/blinds and allow the flickering light of the storm to give you brief glimpses of your home.

Set up a video camera to film the storm sky (don't endanger yourself being out in the lightning). Later on, review the video to see if you find UFOs. They seem to appear during violent storms, in and out of clouds.

One of my favorite things is to burn a stick of incense in the semi darkness and ask questions in a seance-format, asking the smoke to shape in reply to my questions and take flash photos to capture the smoke after the question. For instance, "Elvis, would you please show me your guitar in the smoke?"  Frankincense is a great scent for being able to perceive the other side.

Set up an audio recorder and ask questions of any possible spirits willing to answer you. Listen to it later on the computer and see if they answered.

Try playing an old-fashioned game by candlelight. Turn off the electronics. Sit at a table with drinks and snacks, flickering candles, and the ideal board game - Clue.

Put on an old-fashioned flowing nightgown and carry your candle on a holder as you float down the hallway to take a candlelight bath.

Don't let a beautifully atmospheric night go to waste. Consider purchasing "Dark Shadows" ($7.99) classic or "Kolchak: Night Stalker" ($19.80) digitally to see this evening!
