How Hollow Earth Legends Are Found Around the World

Hollow Earth concepts are one of my obsessions in research. I am intrigued by many things like spontaneous human combustion, creatures living in caves, shadow people, and the like, but Hollow Earth has been a fascination since I first saw the movie "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

It is the same for researcher Dennis Guern, and the reason we have decided to begin a deep research into the concept and any possible evidence of such a place.

Can a layer of civilization live beneath the surface of the earth? Let's look to some legends told by the people of earth for millennia.

The Hopi of the Southwest have a legend of the ant people.

In Hopi legend, the world has gone through several phases or cycles already, and we are in this time living in the Fourth World. In the original world, which was according to legend destroyed by fire, the benevolent Ant People sequestered everyone underground with them and shared what they had. The people were safe from the fire and destruction above. It is said that the Ant People even sacrificed their own food to aid the people. As the Sky God Sotuknang systematically destroyed the world above, the people waited patiently for the fires to burn and the earth to cool before they came up from above.

The Pauites of Nevada and California tell of the Hav-Masuvs

(From a conversation between a grandson and his tribal grandfather)

"’You ask me if we heard of the great silver airships in the days before white-man brought his wagon trains into the land?’

"’Yes grandfather, I come seeking knowledge.’ (Among all tribes of my people, grandfather is the term of greatest respect which one man can pay to another.)

"’We, the Paiute Nation, have known of these ships for untold generations. We also believe that we know something of the people who fly them. They are called The Hav-musuvs.’

"’Who are the Hav-musuvs?’

"’They are a people of the Panamints, and they are as ancient as Tomesha itself.’

"He smiled a little at my confusion.

"’You do not understand? Of course not. You are not a Paiute. Then listen closely and I will lead you back along the trail of the dim past.

"’When the world was young, and this valley which is now dry, parched desert, was a lush, hidden harbor of a blue water- sea which stretched from half way up those mountains to the Gulf of California, it is said that the Hav-musuvs came here in huge rowing-ships. They found great caverns in the Panamints, and in them they built one of their cities. At that time California was the island which the Indians of that state told the Spanish it was, and which they marked so on their maps.

"’Living in their hidden city, the Hav-musuvs ruled the sea with their fast rowing-ships, trading with far-away peoples and bringing strange goods to the great quays said still to exist in the caverns.

"’Then as untold centuries rolled past, the climate began to change. The water in the lake went down until there was no longer a way to the sea. First the way was broken only by the southern mountains, over the tops of which goods could be carried. But as time went by, the water continued to shrink, until the day came when only a dry crust was all that remained of the great blue lake. Then the desert came, and the Fire-God began to walk across Tomesha, The Flaming-Land.

"’When the Hav-musuvs could no longer use their great rowing-ships, they began to think of other means to reach the world beyond. I suppose that is how it happened. We know that they began to use flying canoes. At first they were not large, these silvery ships with wings. They moved with a slight whirring sound, and a dipping movement, like an eagle.

"’The passing centuries brought other changes. Tribe after tribe swept across the land, fighting to possess it for awhile and passing like the storm of sand. In their mountain city still in the caverns, the Hav-musuvs dwelt in peace, far removed from the conflict. Sometimes they were seen in the distance, in their flying ships or riding on the snowy-white animals which took them from ledge to ledge up the cliffs. We have never seen these strange animals at any other place. To these people the passing centuries brought only larger and larger ships, moving always more silently.’

"’Have you ever seen a Hav-musuv?’

"’No, but we have many stories of them. There are reasons why one does not become too curious.’

"’Reasons?’

"’Yes. These strange people have weapons. One is a small tube which stuns one with a prickly feeling like a rain of cactus needles. One cannot move for hours, and during this time the mysterious ones vanish up the cliffs. The other weapon is deadly. It is a long, silvery tube. When this is pointed at you, death follows immediately.’

"’But tell me about these people. What do they look like and how do they dress?’

"’They are a beautiful people. Their skin is a golden tint, and a head band holds back their long dark hair. They dress always in a white fine-spun garment which wraps around them and is draped upon one shoulder. Pale sandals are worn upon their feet...’

The Norwegian fisherman Olaf Jansen told of a journey his fisherman father and he took into a strange land to the north. The accounts are told of in the book "The Smoky God" by Willis George Emerson in 1908. He and his father supposedly spent some time with this race of people in the warm and Garden of Eden like place hidden near the North Pole.

There was not a single man aboard who would not have measured fully twelve feet in height. They all wore full beards, not particularly long, but seemingly short-cropped. They had mild and beautiful faces, exceedingly fair, with ruddy complexions. The hair and beard of some were black, others sandy, and still others yellow. The captain, as we designated the dignitary in command of the great vessel, was fully a head taller than any of his companions. The women averaged from ten to eleven feet in height. Their features were especially regular and refined, while their complexion was of a most delicate tint heightened by a healthful glow.

The Awaxawi (Missouri) believed that they once lived underground and climbed up a vine to the surface of the earth, which had been created by two of their cultural heroes, First Creator and Only Man. They then lived along the streams to the east of the Awatixa as farmers and eventually moved to the Missouri River.

In Irish legends we hear about the people named Tuatha De Danaan (People of the Goddess Danu), a race who moved underground when another race arrived on the island. According to the legends they came to Ireland in ‘dark clouds’ and landed on the mountains of Ireland. Those people in today’s myths are referred to as fairies.

The mysterious Nagas are some of the most intriguing beings we encounter in Hindu myths and legends. Known as the Serpent People they are said to live in two magnificent underground cities known as Patala and Bhogavati (literally "peopled by snakes" or "delightful").

There was even a reported underground set of enormous tunnels beneath Los Angeles, California where a lizard people apparently lived. In an article in the Los Angeles Times in 1934, a man named W. Warren Shufelt claimed -

Around 3000 BC, lizard people constructed thirteen subterranean settlements along the Pacific Coast, to shelter the tribe against future disasters. These underground cities housed a thousand families each, along with stockpiles of food. As the story had it, the tribe used a “chemical solution” that melted solid bedrock to bore out the tunnels and rooms of their subsurface shelters.

Along with housing their people in the event of a disaster, the tunnels were also constructed to hold a trove of golden tablets that chronicled the tribe’s history, the origin of humankind, and the story of the world back to creation. Shufelt was particularly interested in these tablets for both pecuniary and archeological reasons.

A Hopi chief named Little Green Leaf told Shufelt that the vanished race’s capital city was located under present-day downtown Los Angeles. In 1933, after surveying the area, Shufelt occupied the Banning property at 518 North Hill Street and sank a 350-shaft straight down, digging for what he said was a “treasure room” directly underneath. Shufelt said that he had located gold in the catacombs below with the aid of his “radio X-ray.”

This peculiar instrument, which was sort of a tricked-up dowsing rod, had also helped Shufelt map the location and extent of the underground tunnels. He said that the subterranean city was shaped like a giant lizard, with the head in the vicinity of Chavez Ravine (the present location of Dodger Stadium), and the tail tapering out beneath the Central Library. The “key room,” the chamber that contained the map of the city and the directory to the gold tablets, lay several hundred feet under the present site of Times-Mirror Square. Shufelt also claimed that he’d traced passages stretching to the area around the Southwest Museum, and said that ventilation tunnels extended westward, opening at the Pacific Ocean.

Tibetans and Mongolians have legends of Agartha, the underground world and its holy city of Shamballa. It is said that in ancient times, the Mongols were seeking to escape Genghis Khan and went into the underground city.  Agartha is said to be under the earth, all around the globe and the people could move about down there in swift vehicles.

Quetzalcoatl  legend from Mexico was reported as having vanished in a flying saucer for 8 days to visit the subterranean world.

Admiral Byrd, the medal-winning and highly admired explorer, reportedly told of a visit to an unusual land in the South Pole and that a plane or ship could go right into this huge opening where the weather was mild and the source of light was not the sun, but some other light source.

Many cultures including the Chinese, Egyptians and Eskimos speak of a great opening in the north and a race of people who live under the earth's crust.

It is always interesting when many cultures with no connection in ancient times manage to have legends of the same things, such as floods, giant people, and subterranean worlds....

This video is a most excellent viewing on the subject -
