Mt. Everest at 29,000 feet and other mountains in the Tibetan Plateau that tempt hikers to climb to their summits are also magnets for unexplained mysteries. The Himalayas are the tallest peaks in the world and growing a fraction of an inch each year. If para experiences occur rampantly in geologically active areas, then Tibet is surely one of the most spooky places in the world!
When you have a mountain range of enormous size, few who reside in the area, and very active seismic with the Nepal Fault Line activity, it seems like it would be a sort of earth lightning rod for weirdness and this is so. Let's have a look at UFOs, ghosts, earth trumpet sounds, and cryptids in the Himalayas -
UFOs
Sure enough, seismic activity (7.8 earthquake) was followed by a UFO sighting in the area in 2015. The two are often reported hand-in-hand. This was a triangle pattern of lights in the sky.
Some believe that there is a secret base inside Mt. Everest and that satellite images have blacked out the entrance. (LINK) Others believe the blacked out area is a glitch.
Locals report UFOs coming out of the ground and some researchers ran into some lights - video below -
There are other mountain ranges around the world thought to be base entry for UFOs, such as Mt. Shasta in California and the Andes Mountains in South America. Interestingly, UFOs are very often reported above these regions during earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
If one believes in UFO bases here on earth, the frequency of sightings during earth activity might be as simple as standard procedure to evacuate underground bases when seismic activity might compromise their hideouts.
GHOSTS
Sherpas, the native people of the beautiful Himalayas, are a happy, strong, intelligent people. They live in magnificence, brave terrible elements, and are a deeply spiritual people. One of their spiritual beliefs is that if a person dies on the mountain without proper burial, they will haunt the place. (LINK)
The rate of death on Everest and K2 for climbers is between 25-33%! Every now and then a body is found during glacial melting and quakes that move land and snow around. When this happens, at least one more spirit is removed from the mountain for proper burial.
EARTH TRUMPET SOUNDS
The earth has been making some pretty strange sounds lately and people are capturing them on video. They sound like anything from trumpets to squeaking car brakes. The Himalayas are not strangers to captures of these sounds -
We have yet to figure out these odd sounds heard in places around the world and captured on video. The Himalayas have not missed this earth oddity which may or may not be geological in origin.
CRYPTIDS
Yeti comes to mind immediately when one thinks of the Himalayas. The Abominable Snowman, as some refer to them, are a Bigfoot-like reported being within these high elevations.
It is interesting to note that the regions that have Bigfoot-like beings, such as parts of China, Siberia, Australia, Himalayas - there is Denisovans DNA found in the people. Denisovans are an archaic man thought to have gone extinct tens of thousands of years ago, like Neanderthal. They had a high altitude gene. (see more about this in yesterday's post here on GHT about "What Are Yeti?")
A recent DNA study of hair samples given to Dr. Bryan Sykes revealed the samples to all be bear, but found among them was a hybrid bear thought to be extinct. That is a nice finding, but not helpful in determining if Yeti exist.
Josh Gates and "Expedition Unknown" on Travel Channel did a great series this season of the hunt for the Yeti. (LINK). A footprint casting was believed to be a bear, a hair in a cave was found to be human, and another hair taken off a supposed Yeti scalp was unable to be studied because it had been treated with some kind of sealant to keep it intact as it was a religious relic for the Buddhists in that region.
The Yeti have gotten a reputation as being white snowmen, but truthfully witnesses report black and brown as the dominant hair colors they run into. They are also reported as taller than the average people, but perhaps not as exceptionally tall as Yowie and Bigfoot are reported, somewhere in the 6-foot plus range.
Given some impressive witnesses to Yeti, such as explorer Sir Edmund Hillary who sighed the huge footprints on a remote climb, it is harder to ignore such accounts. Bigfoot is elusive enough in North America, but place these forms of man in regions as vast and uninhabited as the Himalayas, and it becomes a very hard one to pinpoint.
LEGENDS
Shambhala: Shambhala is believed to be a Buddhist “pure land” where all the residents have traveled so far along the path towards enlightenment that Shambhala has vanished from human sight and reached a parallel spiritual plane. It is believed that there are hidden openings to Shambhala but only those with pure souls can find these and enter the kingdom.
These prints above (LINK) were sighted in 2014 on Gangkhar Puensum at almost 18,000 feet. The locals call the yeti, Mogi, and they see them up in the higher elevations. The conditions seem quite extreme to us, but imagine a man that evolved purely for high elevations? His agility, his lung capacity, and his skin and circulatory system would allow them to thrive on a diet strictly of meat and not vegetation.

STRANGE LIGHTS
This rather extraordinary video aside, strange lights are seen in the Himalayas with good frequency.
It is speculated that UFOs and strange lights seen in the mountainous region are signs of a hidden alien base within a mountain in the Himalayas.
(LINK) Since Sunday, October 10, 2004, UFOs, ranging in size from "very large cylindrical objects of a dull silver colour" to "small speedy discs," have been seen over the glaciers north of Chini, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from India's border with China. UFOs seen at night were said to "glow red and gold."
"More Indian military personnel and local natives are coming forward in the Himalayas' Tarai area and are reporting many exceedingly abnormal activities and UFO sightings all around the clock."
"Some (Indian) helicopter pilots are complaining about sophisticated jamming."
LEGENDS
Like many people in beautiful regions on the worth, natural formations like mountains and rivers have origins based in the gods and some are sacred. It is not different for the Himalayan people.
Forbidden Mountain: In Bhutan on the border of China is a treacherous mountain called Gangkhar Puensum. It is over 24,000 feet and yet basically untouched and unexplored. In fact, it is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. Some explorations to climb it, couldn't even find it on the border with China.
Prior to the early 1980s, climbing was not allowed in Bhutan in a desire to keep the peaks all clear of human traces, but when they opened the area up for climbing in the latter part of the 20th Century, freak weather and unexpected conditions kept climbers from being able to tackle it. As the mountains around them were considered to hold precious spirits, the government closed down climbing here.
A Japanese team tried to climb it from the Chinese side where it was permitted. Bhutan, however, interrupted the process and the peak to this day remains unclimbed.
(LINK) Gangkhar Puensum is truly a place full of wonder and mystery. Yeti, ghostly apparitions, strange lights, magnetic anomalies, and unexplained disappearances have all been reported from here.
CONCLUSION
Given its isolation, elevation, and climate, the Himalayas remain a great mystery to many people of the world. To those who call the region home, it is sacred, unique, and very dynamic. Those dynamics can also include UFOs, ghosts, odd earth sounds, and Yeti. There is no greater conduit for mystery than an isolated land with deeply-spiritual people who maintain their customs for many generations without interruption in an atmosphere of active seismic and weather activity.
The Himalayas hopefully remain a fair mystery forever, as the one thing it has going for it is the elevation that kills others....
