Treasure Hunting - All Kinds of Treasures Awaiting

Dreaming of grand treasures still undiscovered? They are out there! There are also other things worth money you can be poking around for -

Forrest Fenn Treasure
A treasure of 1-3 millions dollars worth is supposedly buried in the Rocky Mountains. In 1988, Fenn got cancer and had the idea in his mind to take a bronze chest and fill it with gold and precious items, bury it, leaving a poem with a riddle for someone to find it.
There are apparently 9 clues to find it buried in this poem -

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it's no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There'll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.

If you've been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answer I already know,
I've done it tired, and now I'm weak.

So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.

Oak Island
Viewer's of The History Channel's popular show, "Curse of Oak Island" get to watch the saga unfolding as a group seeks a supposed pirate's treasure buried in the ground with flooding booby traps and the prior deaths of other gold seekers before them. The show is highly interesting to watch and they have found some very odd items that show some true promise that there is more down below. Oak Island is in Nova Scotia. Since the 1700s folks were finding flagstones, pick marks, coconut fibers, and strange markings leading them to believe there is a pirate treasure buried there.

Braddock's Gold
I spent an entire summer as a kid looking for Braddock's Gold. General Braddock, it was said, took the payroll in gold and filled two cannons with it, buried them cannon end pointing up and went on to battle, never recovering the payroll again. My mother, an historian, had found a soldier's diary among a series of books cataloging the writings of soldiers and this one told of where they buried the gold, including an oak tree, 50 paces east and the like. Many have wanted to find this treasure and it is barely known of by anyone. Whether it is true or not has been under debate, but this historic diary hidden away in a dusty Virginia Room at a Fairfax Library did, in fact, tell of it in quite earnest excitement and it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

Incan Lost City of Paititi
Supposedly lying east of the Andes, in remote rainforests in Southwest Peru/Northern Bolivia, right between Bolivia and Brazil, is a lost Incan city of gold.

Source: In 2001 the Italian archaeologist Mario Polia discovered the report of the missionary Andres Lopez in the archives of the Jesuits in Rome. In the document, which dates from about 1600, Lopez describes a large city rich in gold, silver and jewels, located in the middle of the tropical jungle called Paititi by the natives. Lopez informed the Pope about his discovery. Conspiracy theories maintain that the Vatican has kept Paititi's location secret for its own reasons.

Not really in the mood for treasures but want some extra cash? Well, there are some treasures in the earth waiting to be foraged for -

Truffles - Can be found anywhere the are trees, with the exception of a few trees like maples and cedars. They fruit in fall, winter and spring depending on the species and location. They are between organic litter and soil about 1-6 inches deep. They can be found by raking back the organic litter to find what look like little potatoes, often beige, yellow or reddish brown. Ideally, they should be fully mature to have a strong scent. These are well sought after by restaurants..

Gold - There is a lot of gold in America, but there are also a lot of rules about where you can go panning and digging, sifting and such, so it's best to align yourself with your local rockhounds or gold panning groups to get proper direction and affiliation, as well as access to places others might not be able to go.

Meteorites - meteorites are worth a good deal and finding them can be fun. Here's some basic tips. You can arm yourself with a metal detector or even a pole with a strong magnet on the end to identify the rocks with metal content. The desert is the ideal place simply because lack of rainfall means the rocks sit on the surface a good long time and don't get buried.

Wild ginseng -

This prized root is medicinal and sought after and if you don't think you could make money harvesting or growing it - check this out.
