America's Creepiest Museums

If you consider yourself a bit of a museum buff, but you also hold a fascination for the creepy or unexplained, there are some museums you might want to hit this springtime that will give you knowledge and chills. Here's just a few in the USA.

Museum of Death
Hollywood, California
New Orleans, Louisiana (also)

This self-guided tour takes about an hour and educates people on a subject that is often taboo - death. It includes serial murderers' art, photos of crime scenes, execution devices, morticians' tools, and more. This is for those who like dark forbidden subject matter or even those interested in the history of serial killers or horror.

If you want to get into the mood for a visit, here's some movie suggestions -

"Flatliners," "Phantasm," "Mausoleum," "Zodiac," "Helter Skelter," "American Psycho"

Salem Witch Museum
Salem, Massachusetts

This museum is devoted to the 1692 witch trials. Many scenes are recreated with mannequins on display. They also provide education about witches and about the hysteria surrounding the trials.

If you want to get in the mood for a visit, here's some movie suggestions -

"An American Haunting," "Hocus Pocus," "Salem Witch Trials," "The Crucible," "Sleepy Hollow"

National Museum of Funeral History

Mutter Museum
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This thorough and impressive museum is all about medicine and the history of trying to cure people, oddities, bizarre practices, and more. There are vast examples of skulls and medical oddities, tools of the trade and even Albert Einstein's brain!

"Elephant Man," "Funhouse," "The Goonies," "The Toxic Avenger," "Swamp Thing"

Vent Haven Museum
Fort Mitchell, Kentucky

Although many of us have a fascination with ventriloquists and how they do what they do, their dolls remain a bit unsettling to many. The Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky is open May through September. You schedule an appointment to get in and see the display and learn more about ventriloquism.

If you want to get in the mood for the visit, here's some movie suggestions -
