Movies For Cryptid Lovers

I'm going to share some movies that are great for those who love cryptids, from Loch Ness to thunderbirds, Bigfoot to Mothman. Let's see what you might want to watch to satisfy the wonder and the terror....

Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) An Edinburgh professor and assorted colleagues follow an explorer's trail down an extinct Icelandic volcano to the earth's center.

Jurassic Park (1993) During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.

Pterydactyl (2005)  A dormant volcano deep with the Turkish forest holds within it a deadly secret. Perfectly preserved, a nest of pterodactyl eggs are ready to hatch...


Creature From Black Lake (1976) Two men exploring the Louisiana swamps run into a Bigfoot-type creature.

Snowbeast (1977) A Colorado ski resort is besieged by a sub-human beast that commits brutal murders on the slopes.

The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972) A documentary-style drama about the "Fouke Monster", a Bigfoot-type creature that has been sighted in and around Fouke, Arkansas since the 1950s.

Letters From the Big Man (2011) Sarah Smith, an artist and government hydrologist, sets out on a post-fire stream survey in a remote part of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness of southwestern Oregon. In the course of her journey through this ancient and ecologically diverse land, she unwittingly finds herself interacting with a sasquatch man, and a mutual curiosity ensues. As their friendship deepens, Sarah must take bold steps to protect his privacy, as well as her own.

The Abdominable Snowman (1957)  A kindly English botanist and a gruff American scientist lead an expedition to the Himalayas in search of the legendary Yeti.

Harry and the Hendersons (1987) The Henderson family adopt a friendly Sasquatch after accidentally running him over on a hunting trip, but have a hard time trying to keep him away from the authorities and an eccentric hunter who's determined to catch "Bigfoot".


The Jersey Devil (2005) Josephine Leeds was cursed by the townspeople of Shroud's Point for being the widow of a traitor and ultimately a whore. She was outcast and left to fen for herself and her family. One by one Josephine's children fell to starvation, and as they died she fed their remains to herself and her surviving children. What started as a struggle for survival became a blood lust that consumed her and slowly drove her insane. By the time she was pregnant with her last child, she swore it would be born without a soul because of what she had done. Josephine vowed vengeance upon the people of Shroud's Point for forsaking her, and her soul-less child would carry it out. Born deformed of body and soul the Leeds baby would feed on what it had a taste for... human flesh. Two-hundred and Sixty years later... the legend continues.

13th Child (2002) People are being killed by someone or something using superhuman strength. A clever DA Assistant is sent to investigate. Is this just a way to commit the perfect murder or will the legend of the Jersey Devil prove to be true?


The Mothman Prophecies (2002) A reporter is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of strange events, including psychic visions and the appearance of bizarre entities.


Trog (1970) A sympathetic anthropologist uses drugs and surgery to try to communicate with a primitive troglodyte who is found living in a local cave.

Iceman (1984) An anthropologist who is part of an arctic exploration team discovers the body of a prehistoric Neanderthal man who is subsequently resuscitated. The researcher must then decide what to do with the prehistoric man and he finds himself defending the man from those that want to dissect him in the name of science.

The Ape Man (1943) A crazed scientist accidentally turns himself into a half ape, half human creature, and scrambles to find a cure.


Lizard Man (2012)  Haunted by a terrifying incident in his past, billionaire Bill Hansen seeks revenge by enlisting a team of mercenaries and a television personality to capture and exploit a dangerous lizard-like creature.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) A strange prehistoric beast lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. A group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study.


Swamp Thing (1982) After a violent incident with a special chemical, a research scientist is turned into a swamp plant monster.

The Fly (1958)  A scientist has a horrific accident when he tries to use his newly invented teleportation device.

Wolf (1994) Publisher Will Randall becomes a werewolf and has to fight to keep his job.


Cryptid (2006)  Gruesome murders of South African farmers spur reports of a possible "cryptid" - a creature previously discovered by science. The worldwide news coverage of the gruesome murder attracts an international team of scientists to the remote area which is considered by some to be the "cradle of civilization".

Congo (1995)  When an expedition to the African Congo ends in disaster, a new team is assembled to find out what went wrong.
