Hashima ("Battleship") Island, Japan
This island used to be a mining facility that operated from the late 1800s to 1974. With the coal business shutting down there, the residents rushed from the island back to the mainland, leaving their possessions and the island to be a lonely shell of is once active and thriving self.
Isn't it crazy to see what nearly 40 years can do to an island city?
Apparently, a small part of the island is now open to tourists so they can make enough cash to shore up the crumbling buildings and let us crazy URBEX'ers have our fun. I am so stoked!
Wow, I would love to visit there too. Oh the pictures I could take....
