Still Grieving "Stark Raving Mad'

(The Halloween episode: The best ever!)

Everyone has a show that when it's cancelled they are dumbfounded, lost, floundering. I have never (even though it's like 9 or 10 years) gotten over the cancellation of "Stark Raving Mad." I was lucky enough to copy most episodes, but missed copying the Halloween episode--the funniest one. I have never felt so much regret about a show cancelling. It was my absolute favorite.

Tony Shalhoub and Neil Patrick Harris made this show an unbelievably entertaining 30 minutes. Shalhoub played a misanthropic, grouchy, moody and dark horror writer. Neil plays the preppy, germaphobic, ambitious New York editor forced to work with him and encourage him to get a second novel done after his blockbuster first one shot him upon the bestseller list and he is now experiencing writer's block.

The entire premise of the show with these this "odd couple" put together made it hilarious as did all the pranks that Shalhoub's character constantly played upon poor "Henry." I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will somehow come out on DVD. It was a short-run series but its impression on me was long-lasting.

  1. I have to admit that I never seen an episode of this show...shame on me. I love both these guys, they are very funny. I just may have to look for the videos.

  3. Julie;
    I always swear, I want my own Sheldon. He's just fantastic and I would love to have him underfoot. That is the replacement show for me. You can probably find some episodes of Stark Raving Mad on YouTube. Most episodes had me crying I was laughing so hard. It was just the ideal premise and the perfect casting. I have no idea what went wrong, but damn--I miss it! I adore Neil Patrick Harris. I love seeing him in "How I Met Your Mother" but his character on "Stark Raving Mad" was so much better for him. I always say there's a few guys I'd love to hang out and shoot the breeze with, Neil is one and Joel McHale and Josh Gates are the others...I guess you can see a theme that I love sense of humor.

  6. I had never seen this either.

    By simple twists of fate... I spent almost 9 years in various armpits overseas, before I came back to the US. It was back in the dark ages when either no stateside television was available or we had the "stuff" long before it was available to be sold to the public to play video tapes.

    Anyway, I remember people transferring in and talking about a show called "Mork and Mindy" and I wanted to see it so bad... when I finally made it home, it had been taken off the air. I didn't even get to see a re-run for about ten years.... I was greatly let down.

    The two that I wish there was more of: Star Trek and Dark Shadows.

  7. To some extent, I am ashamed to say that I indeed named my first born child after the sexy hot werewolf in Dark Shadows... I was young..

  8. @eloh;
    Yeah, you didn't miss much. Mork and Mindy was rather ridiculous. I get the naming the kid thing. I named my son for Alex VanHalen the drummer and then his middle name is Jason for July, August, September, October, November. Hee hee

  9. The DVD's are available. They are from a TV station in PA. The quality isn't great but it will do. I'll try to find the link as I bought all 22 episode over a year ago.
