Classic Campy Horror Movies

We love horror movies. No doubt about it. Sometimes, we feel like having horror lite, or something that isn't quite so dark and sinister, perhaps a little saucy or one that is tongue-in-cheek. Here's just some classic campy ones. They are total cult favs.

Tremors
Natives of a small isolated town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one. Kevin Bacon.

The Burbs
An overstressed suburbanite and his paramilitaric neighbor struggle to prove their paranoid theory that the new family in town is a front for a cannibalistic cult. Tom Hanks.

Killer Clowns From Outer Space
Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.

Young Frankenstein
Dr. Frankenstein's grandson, after years of living down the family reputation, inherits granddad's castle and repeats the experiments. Gene Wilder.

The Evil Dead
Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. Bruce Campbell.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Tim Curry.

Fright Night
When a teenager learns that his next door neighbour is a vampire, no one will believe him. Chris Sarandon.

The Toxic Avenger

Tromaville has a monstrous new hero. The Toxic Avenger is born when mop boy Melvin Junko falls into a vat of toxic waste. Now evildoers will have a lot to lose.

There are some modern ones like Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead that are good and over time will become cult favorite classics. I admit I'd add to that campy category all Syfy Original Movies, but I don't think they'll ever be classic.

  1. Except for Toxic Avenger (which I've never seen), the rest are all in my movie library
