Most Unusual Phobias and Philias

Fear of writing with shaky hand

Most of us known the most common phobias; snakes, heights, airplanes, public speaking, tight spaces, spiders.... But, there are some truly original and unusual ones out there too. Maybe you have one or two of them?
Fear of peanut butter sticking to the root of your mouth.

Fear of being without your mobile phone.

Fear of doorknobs.

Fear of foreign languages.

Fear of urinating in public bathrooms.

Fear of eye contact.

Fear of mirrors.

Fear of money.

Fear of numbers.

Fear of the color yellow.

Fear of balloons.

Fear of bathing.

Fear of belly buttons.

Fear of stepping on a crack

Fear of white foods.

Fear of sleeping.

Okay, okay, so there are plenty of "quirky" phobias and then on the other end of the spectrum, plenty of fetishes. For every phobia (fear of), there is a philia (love of). There are some really common philias, as well, such as love of rain, love of feet, love of horror, love of risk-taking adrenalin rushes.

There are also some really unusual philias -

Love of drinking blood.

Love of the sound of paper crumpling.

Love of the smell of farts.

Love of bugs.

Love of file cabinets.

We are complex creatures. The things we are drawn to and afraid of are compilation of experiences and general inborne proclivities.

There has been some research that phobias can also be inherited in our genes, that a parent can have a bad experience and somehow that alters your DNA.

An example of that is a test rat that was harassed with a broom over and over again and developed an intense fear of being chased with it. It went on to have a baby rat, away from brooms. But, as the baby made its way into maturity, the very sight of a broom sent it into terror. It makes you wonder about the offspring of folks from the holocaust or tsunamis, those born to parents who maybe fell from a height or nearly drowned.

There are some wonderful therapies for overcoming phobias.

LINK: Immersive therapy, also known as immersion therapy, is an advanced treatment method that helps people confront and process their fears by placing them in digitally-generated environments that accurately recreate their feared stimuli both visually and through other sensory inputs.

I can speak for many of us with a fear of heights and it is often an issue with depth perception. Vertigo is a real thing and the feeling you can't find even safe ground to stand on when in a precarious location, is extremely common. I've tried exposing myself to heights -

And, no matter how often I did this, I never got rid of one bit of the dizziness and disorientation. The Grand Canyon was an impossible thing to view and understand depth-wise. Up escalators and up glass elevators are a nightmare, but going down - no problem.

So far as the philias or fetishes, well, they are eccentric quirks that make a person unique. Just so long as no one else is hurt, having an eye for some oddity is just appreciating a uniqueness.

Happy Philia'ing and good luck working on your phobia'ing.
