Hitchhiking Ghosts and Haunted Roadsides

Nearly every town has some legend of a hitchhiker getting into a car and then revealing they are a ghost. The Haunted Mansion theme in Disneyland aside, this is a real reported incident, over and over again.

In Anthem, Arizona, there are reports of a ghost along the highway with a lantern in its hand.

Along Highway 87 in Arizona between Phoenix and Payson, folks have picked up translucent figures on their dashcams.

The old Highway 666 (now 491) has had a lot of phenomenon reported. The highway cuts through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah has frequent reports of a pale girl ghost in a white outdated looking dress. She stands alone on the roadside.

Resurrection Mary in Justice, Illinois is perhaps the most famous hitchhiking ghost. The figure has been associated with Resurrection Cemetery. Some stories say she was a young woman who walked home from a dance and was hit by a car. People report even picking up this figure and finding she has vanished.

Reader Road in Indiana has a hitchhiking female ghost that vanishes near Ross Cemetery.

In Easton, Connecticut reports are seen of a woman who vanishes at Union Cemetery along Rt 59.

Bluff Mountain, Virginia is where a 19th Century legend of a boy missing in the woods leaves a figure and a voice coming from the child's ghost.

Other roadside ghostly happenings include crybaby bridges (many throughout America) where children's voices are heard and legends speak of falling from the bridge or a car crash on the bridge. Another one is gravity hills where cars put in neutral seem to roll uphill.

There are many reported haunted roadways in America. Some are - Clinton Rd in West Milford, NJ, Archer Ave in Illinois, US Route 491 (previously Hwy 666) in the Four Corners/Southwest, Riverdale Rd., Colorado, Boy Scout Lane, Wisconsin, Bray Rd., Elkhorn, WI.

Below is an interesting find on a junkyard camera. Later, folks investigated to find the car the ghost was floating around was involved in a deadly crash. The woman who died happens to kinda resemble the ghost image.

Of course, there are also the lovable hitchhiking ghosts at Disneyland that ride in your cart with you at the end of the ride.

The tall skinny one is Ezra Beane. The ghost carrying the carpetbag is Phineas Plump. The bearded man in chains is the prisoner "Gus."
