Curating a Halloween Decor Theme

One year when I was downsizing my life, I had to go through everything I owned and sold or donated 4/5ths of what I owned so I could fit in a one bedroom size space. It was then that I had to confront my Halloween addiction and really rethink it.

Like most folks, I would pick up a few things each year that sang to me. They were miscellaneous - ghosts, blinking lights, zombie baby dolls, etc. None of it really made sense and it made me think of soup.

You make a soup and add too many veggies to it and you lose the flavor of any particular veggie and you end up with a vague monstrosity. If you make it a butternut squash soup, it showcases the star.

And so it was with the Halloween mish mash. I had to ask myself, what style do I want to curate and use every year, not affected by trends, but what story do I want to tell at Halloween and will never get sick of and add to that theme throughout the years?

Ultimately, I wanted something gothic and ghostly. I decided a haunted house theme was best. This would involve spider webs, candleabras, creepy portraits with moving eyes, furniture covered in white sheets, cheesecloth tattered curtains, a 4-foot tall creepy baby doll spray painted white and standing in the corner like a ghostly figure, a window with a lightning flashing light, and the like.

There is something so much more dramatic in having a thematic decor. Just think of haunted attractions - you go in to a doll house theme and you are immersed with anticipation in that realm. If you went into a haunted house with dracula, spiders, a ghost, and a mental patient screaming in one room, you really don't feel the mood.

So, what themes might you focus on and curate?

Gothic. Look to the spiritual movement during the Victorian Era. Think black, deep wine color, silver, candles, antiques, heavy curtains, steampunk designs, gargoyles, seance table, ouija board, carved skulls, candleabras, hurricane lamps, ornate picture frames, bats....

Good movies to get inspired - "Woman in Black," "Mark of the Witch," "The Blood on Satan's Claw."

Gypsy. Look to a gypsy vardo wagon. think Tea set, tarot cards, crystals, beaded curtains, a palmistry poster showing the palm's lines, a crystal ball layered rugs, tassled pillows, and mixed patterned fabrics....

Good movies to get inspired - "Wolfman," "The Vampires Night Orgy," "Drag Me to Hell."

Slasher. Look to the teenage killing fields of 80s slashers. Think Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees masks, references to Crystal Lake and Haddonfield, a serial killers newspaper clippings on the wall splattered with blood.

Good movies to get inspired - "Halloween," "Friday the 13th," "Terror Train."

Witch. Look to the mystical atmosphere of ancient witchcraft with crude bottles and potions. Think potion bottles, hanging dried herbs, brooms, witch hat, black cats, cauldrons, fog....

Good movies for inspiration is "The Witch," "Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "Practical Magic."

Universal Monsters. Look to Frankenstein, mummy, gillman, Dracula, Wolfman. Think gothic setting, electricity, crude laboratory, Halloween wall covering like ancient castle block walls, lightning, coffin, forest, howling sounds....

Good movies to get inspired - "Wolfman," "Bram Stoker's Dracula," "The Curse of Frankenstein."

Graveyard.  Look to famous creepy cemeteries like Savannah's "Bonaventure." Statues headstones, mausoleums, leaded windows, skeletons, wrought iron fencing, ghosts, zombies....

Good movies to get inspired - "Cemetery Man," "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things," "The Serpent and the Rainbow."

Aliens. Look to Scifi movies from the 50s onward. Cardboard spaceship, metal/high tech environment,  blinking colored lights, aliens, exam table, bright exam light, alien autopsy cake with gloves/mask/scalpel....

Good movies to inspire - "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Aliens," "Men in Black."

Dolls/mannequins. Look to displays that put together dolls en masse like the infamous "Doll Island" in Mexico. Marionettes, ventriloquist dolls, baby dolls, mannequins, doll parts, talking dolls, baskets of doll heads....

Movies to get you inspired - "Tourist Trap," "Devil Doll," "The Boy."

Carnival/clowns. Look to vintage carnivals and sideshows. Think Carnival signs, clown dolls, bright colors, bright lights, shooting gallery items, sideshow freaks....

Good movies to inspire - "Freaks," "The Funhouse," "Dark Ride."

I would also suggest that you consider skimming through secondhand stores and flea markets, marketplace on Facebook, nextdoor dot com, and other places to add to the collection.

Donate or sell items that were impulse buys and make no sense to your theme.

Maybe have a Halloween exchange party with friends and everyone brings items they don't want anymore and trades. You can serve some miniature Halloween candies and play "Hocus Pocus" in the background.

Usually 3/4 of what I put together, I DIY'd from items I found around the house and yard.
