Now that I'm located in Georgia, the city of Savannah is large on my targets to explore. I grew up in a Civil War hospital manor home in Virginia with a mother who was an historian. Savannah has always piqued my curiosity.
There are numerous ghost tours, which tells you a lot about Savannah. In fact, when pushed to judge the haunting factor, most will admit it is the most haunted city in the US.
There are tons of historic sites with ghostly offerings and many locations that just look haunted, like the infamous Bonaventure Cemetery.
Haunted sites
The Gribble House: In 1909 this was the site of multiple axe murders.
The Pirate's House: This is one of Savannah's oldest buildings at 250 years old. It also has underground tunnels that led to the river. Some believe the pirate Captain Flint died there. The tunnels are associated with a shanghai situation where people were taken down there to the river and thrown onto boats as laborers.
Madison Square: Considered the most haunted outdoor location. It was said that Revolutionary War British soldiers were dug up in this area when they began construction in the area.
The Mercer Williams House: Inspiring "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," If a home could be cursed for generations of occupants, this one's it. Construction was completed in 1868, after the war. It was the location of a murderous shooting that led to a lingering death. It seems anyone living there had calamaties. It's dark gothic structure helps to promote the overall malaise of the site.
The Sorrel Weed House: This location is touted as the most haunted location in Savannah. Built in 1840 by Francis Sorrel, a shipping magnet. The lingering darkness of a wife who committed suicide and a young servant held prisoner.
The Marshall House: Savannah's oldest hotel. Ghosts are apparently seen in the hallways and children's voices heard. Odd things like the bathroom door opening on its own are also reported.
Haunted B&Bs
Foley House Inn: With 19 rooms available, this lovely and historic inn is a dream! The home was reconstructed following the great fire of 1889 in Savannah. It is said the place is haunted by a vengefull opera singer as well as other Victorian era spirits.
Hamilton Turner Inn: Located on historic Lafayette Square. It is absolutely everything you want a Savannah Inn to be. This haunting is said to mix the usual culprits, restless spirits, and a touch of voodoo.
Kehoe House: Beautiful columns, gracious front porch. Ah, this is dreamy! Room 201 is considered the most ghostly room at this inn. A spirit shows itself at the cupola atop the building, as well.
