Camping Hacks

Let's face it - it's camping time of year. Often, we pack for these events the same way as every year, but perhaps it's time to find easier and more elegant ways to load up -
nachos

pancake batter

apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, walnuts (optional)

banana with mini marshmallows and choc chips, can add peanut butter chips too. heated in foil

cinnamon roll inside an hollow orange half

meatloaf mix inside onion and wrapped in foil to cook

A child of the 70s, camping was basic - hot dogs, beans, smores.

As an adult, I prepped the meal in a ziploc bag with cut up meats, veggies, marinade. I put eggs into a thermos. I had lots of seasoning mixes, oils, potatoes, and canned beans. I also used hard breads like hard rolls, sourdough, and breadsticks. Sauces like buffalo, BBQ, and marinara, were standards. Snacks were jerky, trail mix, hard cheeses, and bananas. Backups were things like canned chili and baked beans, granola bars, and sardines.

If you cook at your sleep site, it's critical to dispose of all things that are scented and trash. We usually hung them high in trees or burned remaining items in the fire.

Anything that can last a long time without spoiling, like dehydrated items and canned items, use last. They can be your backup should things go wrong, foods burn, animals take them away, or weather keeps you there long. Balance this out as backup.

If your camping involves a trailer camper or RV, or even a cabin or yurt, it's less rustic and more open to a wider amount of cooking. Usually a rustic camping trip involves what you can carry. One person carries water, others might carry food or tents, etc. Share the glory.

Happy and safe camping!
