In 1930, an Inuit village in Canada went missing all at once. The mystery continues to this day.
Fur trappers came across the village and found empty huts with fires still burning in the hearths, food uneaten, and sled dogs frozen in place.
Even more chilling is a report that the graves had all been dug up.
The legends lives on, although there apparently is no real evidence. It is a chilling story that would make a great opening to a movie.
There are tons of abandoned sites around the world. I lived in Phoenix upon what was once a missing tribe's crematory. There was no evidence today of the HoHoKam's muertes village, but I did plant a tree once and about 3-4 feet down, ran into hardened ancient charcoal.
Montezuma's Castle, Arizona: Nestled in a limestone cliff and built by an ancient pueblo people, the structure remains, as does its mystery. Why did they build there? Where did they go?
Adak Island, Alaska: It was an ideal Cold War Era location and utilized for military supplies. It closed in 1997, having served its purpose. The military withdrew and the buildings crumble.
There are hundreds of such locations that either have natural disasters, industries that die, wars that end, or indigenous people that move on, lose water or resources.
