Swales are used here in the Desert Southwest, as well. These scoops can capture water from precious rains and prevent rain from just washing away on the hard-baked earth.
Above is a photo of the swales in Niger, an area of North Africa that is turning desert transition over to green again.
It reminded me of something else -
These scoops (above) go on for many miles in Nazca, Peru. Perched atop a ridge line, they are ideal for capturing rains. Was their purpose similar to the permaculture project in Niger, Africa?
I leave y'all to contemplate that one!
