Nazca Scoops Mystery Answered?

As I'm a permaculture freak, I couldn't help noticing something going on in Africa. It reminded me of another location on Planet Earth -

Swales are used here in the Desert Southwest, as well. These scoops can capture water from precious rains and prevent rain from just washing away on the hard-baked earth.

Above is a photo of the swales in Niger, an area of North Africa that is turning desert transition over to green again.

It reminded me of something else -

These scoops (above) go on for many miles in Nazca, Peru. Perched atop a ridge line, they are ideal for capturing rains. Was their purpose similar to the permaculture project in Niger, Africa?

I leave y'all to contemplate that one!
