Things slow down and get cozy in autumn. Consider having some friends over for wine and a nibble platter. Here's some ideal ideas for what to serve -
Figs, grapes, pomegranate seeds, persimmons, hard cheese, grainy mustard, dark breads, pumpkin bread, apple butter, cured ham, caramels, butterscotch candies, dark chocolate, olives, walnuts, pumpkin seeds.
Good wines for autumn - pinot noir, chardonnay, merlot and sparkling wine.
Good music for autumn - Go classical music and here's some ideas from (LINK) here.
Antonio Vivaldi, L'autunno violin concerto from The Four Seasons
Joseph Haydn, Autumn section of The Seasons
Ploughman's Platter - This is my #1 favorite thing in the fall. I'm not sure why I associate it with autumn, except I use ingredients that represent autumn. It usually involves a platter with crusty bread, ham, grainy mustard, butter, a few kinds of good cheese, pickles, pickled onions, tomatoes.
My own version, perhaps influenced by time time in the west and love of wine country food includes also things like walnuts, grapes, salami, figs, apple butter, dark chocolates.
It can be nibbled on while watching movies on a rainy day instead of a lunch meal. It goes great with all wines or spiced cider.
When I think of autumn, I think of hot mulled cider, pumpkin ale, and port wine.
However you make your pairings, the tastes of autumn are smoky, tart, vinegary, salty, and sweet. Indulge in a sample platter!
