What Horror Movies Am I Excited About?

I just bought "Insidious" because I really enjoyed "Dead Silence" and there aren't enough moody horror movies that have tons of atmosphere, creepy dolls, and scary music. It wasn't original, but it satisfied me more than anything I've seen that's new all year.

I pre-ordered a horror movie that I have never seen. Yes, I bought it without seeing it because it's my two favorite things--Scandinavian horror and trolls! The review will be up this afternoon.

Hammer Films is back at it again (I've waited forever!!!) They know how to do moody, creepy, haunting shit. This upcoming movie is so atmospheric--I want to jump in it and live in that world. That's when a movie has me riveted--when it creates a place I want to be a part of. The remake of Sherlock Holmes and The Wolf Man did that for me, created worlds I wanted to linger in, but the plots were kind of lame. I'm hoping that this movie doesn't end up a snooze like "Turn of the Screw" or "The Others." What I see in this trailer makes me think it might end up being my favorite horror of all time. Just look at this one coming out in February, "The Woman in Black"

"Phasma Ex Machina" or "Ghost From the Machine" is one I watched the last couple years to see where it went and how it developed. I just found out it's on DVD, so guess what I just got in the mail? Just look at this trailer and tell me if you aren't curious about this one? As a ghost hunter, I'm very excited about it. I'm watching it tonight and will be reviewing it excitedly!

Here's a remake I'm willing to give a try. "Fright Night"

Here's a remake I don't think I want to see... "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"

  1. I can't wait to see "The Woman in Black"!!! I'm going to watch the "Fright Night" remake, too, because I want to see David Tennant in it, and I'm also curious to see how it turned out.

  3. So want to see the Woman in Black and maybe I will get off my butt today and catch fright night at a matinee.

  4. But in watching that fright night trailer, I will agree that today's trailers basically give it all away--plot points and all.

  6. Fright Night was pretty good, kind of creepy and funny at the same time, I liked Insidious too, even though it got kind of weird at the end. I still want to see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, even though I heard it wasn't that scary. The ones that you suggested look pretty good, I'm going to check them out!

  7. Hey Stephanie;
Let me know what you think of them when you see them. I'm seeing Phasma Ex Machina tonight and will have a review for tomorrow, no doubt. I am really excited about Woman in Black. I get the feeling it'll be limp as far as horror, but if it can pull off that kind of atmosphere and mood, it'll be a winner in my book. It's not even the situations so much that I like about horror, it's the world I get to move around in.

  8. I want to go see Frright Night. Freakin David Tennant!! Yus!

Unfortunately, my friend and I wasted money and saw Don't Be Afraid Of the Dark. We figured it was Guillermo Del Toro, He would have done a good job.
Instead we sat there and laughed through the entire movie, make jokes to each other, and left with a headache from the sound.
    Soooo yeah. :-\

  9. Del Toro should be a set designer. Period. He is great with mood and atmosphere and then he brings kids into every storyline, even if they aren't appropriate. The man has some childhood issues he needs resolved before he ruins another movie. I got sick of Stephen King for the same reason--every plot involved childhood buddies, the State of Maine and a drunken asshole father.

  10. Hahaha, My friend is a huge fan of Del Toro's monsters and such.
I'll give him credit though... He did research for these ones. Except I'm not sure if I like the fact that I knew exactly what was coming before we even had a hint of the "monsters"
I never saw the original either so. After sitting through this one, I don't want to sit through the original.
And this child... I swear, she was a goth kid in training. We laughed so hard about it.

  11. The Lady In Black trailer might be the best horror-movie trailer ever. Looks fantastic. Also, Phasma Ex Machina looks interesting. Not available on Netflix yet, but I saved it.

  12. Tomorrow I will report on Phasma Ex Machina. I was in contact with the makers of it early on and supporting the effort. The concept is solid.
