Shivers Monday: Victorian Creepiness

Cameras and spiritualism--cool combo. I adore the turn-of-the-century Victorian era and the steampunk movement that has developed from it. To that end, my dear buddy at Gnostalgia sent me a link that fascinated me so much that I printed out four of the pics, tore their edges, decoupaged them to a canvas painted black and hot glued a rusted sprocket in the center to make my own creepy nod to horror and steampunk.

  5. I'm digging the piece of art you made from the photos.

    The Victorians were an odd lot, what with their ideas that human urges should be suppressed, but still had a public fascination with things that today would be called "Morbid". Still, they had cool clothes, and did help give rise to Steampunk. Speaking of which, you might want to watch this:

  7. Cool pics!

    LOL at the naked lady choosing a head for her man.
    (Why was she naked? Who cares!)

    I imagine the clichè counterpart to that one would be a woman's head and a naked man trying to pick out a body for her.

  8. Eric;
    Yes, something tells me that the man would forget to put the head on the female mannequin and just concern himself with the other body parts to attach. Me? I'd probably want him to have telescopic legs so I can wear heels and still be shorter than him.

  9. I'm six feet tall. You'd need some pretty tall heels to be taller than me, I reckon.

    (Or I could just go barefoot)

  10. I'm 5'8". My 4-inch heels would make us even.

  11. Oh well, there are no perfect mates...there are only the few pursuing perfection.

  12. Adrian;
    I never really thought about a type so much as a content. Whatever package it comes in, I'm pretty damned happy. Someone who can laugh at his own mistakes, has a sense of humor, not afraid of being expressive, not uptight, open-minded... Pretty vague qualities to some, but when you put them together, a guy is total magic. It's so much easier for women. We never fall in love with looks. We fall in love with a personality/qualities. For men, they don't get past looks to find the content. When a woman's in love, the man she's with is the most handsome man in all the world. So, guys have it much easier finding women than women have finding men. If we're pudgy or older or plain, we're screwed.

    Totally!

    Barry;
    I bet they had intriguing exciting lives. They may be gone, but a moment in time when they did something wild and creative, lives on to fascinate us. Makes you wonder how much of your blog will live on forever...

  20. I think what stands out in my mind the most from this era were those corpse photographs that they took with a dead relative (often times an infant) in a way that propped them up to look alive. I think those are the creepiest things I have ever seen in fact.

    And just to add to the ongoing conversation here, I think every man should read the story of "Skeleton Woman" from the book Women Who Run with the Wolves. I think that story changed my life for good in that I see the anesthetics of a woman to be only the sweet candy shell to the real goodness inside.

  21. Aaron, you are the second person to tell me about that book. Guess I'm going to have to read that. If a man is good to a woman, he has someone not only faithful but who would treat him like a god. He just can't neglect her. We're like flowers, we need water and fertilizing (oh, hell, that's the fun part). I did a post on those post mortem pics. They are creepy. When I inherited my mom's pics when she died, I found a bunch of those from the Victorian era of family members. One of them, he was in a coffin in the front lawn in front of a log cabin with everyone crowded around him.
