As a followup to the last post about horror movie locations, I thought I’d pursue some of those really good classics that had such atmosphere and mood. Let’s see where they were filmed.
“The Uninvited” 1944. This one’ll shock you—I had to look it up in several places because I didn’t believe it. Now, I’ve got to re-watch it again and see if I can find the hints of where it was filmed.. The seaside scenes were filmed in San Francisco, but much of the movie was filmed in Phoenix, Arizona. This was supposed to be one of those misty Cliffside locations in Cornwall. Amazing, huh?
“The Wolf Man” with Lon Chaney. They did a fine job of atmosphere filming this at Universal Studios!
“The Haunting”1963. This movie was supposed to take place in New England but with the decidedly British actors and the sign on the roadway as Eleanor drives to the estate that proclaim there was an “apartment for let,” it was obvious this wasn’t actually filmed here. It was filmed in Alderminster, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, UK
“The Legend of Hell House” : Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England, UK
“The Changeling” Boeing Field - 7149 Perimeter Road, Seattle, Washington, USA
“The Wicker Man” 1973. Burrow Head, Isle of Whithorn, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, UK

“Frankenstein” 1931. Universal studies, CA

ReplyDeleteI have to admit, that's my favorite of all time. I knew it had to be filmed in England by little hints and cues in the film, but I always wondered where the exterior house was. I'm sure the interior was a set, but the outside was very creepy.
ReplyDeleteOh …. my …. Gods! …. ya Gno, once I finally really get my mojo goin'on, you're gonna be in at least one of my movies. Coming from northeast Yonkers, NY & right smack dab next to (well, give or take a street, Odell Avenue & St. John's Riverside Hospital) next to Untermyer Park, itself the centerpiece to the tragic Son of Sam Satanic cult, we find the broken down palace of Alder Manor, in which, pretending to be an estate in Ireland, the 1998 Michael Almereyda directed horror gem, Trance, later renamed Eternal: Kiss of the Mummy, was filmed. Ya have to watch it, Autumn & all ye presents, ya jus' havta! Funnily enough, the premises have recently become the HQ for the Tara Circle Irish Cultural Centre. Check that out. Twilight language, anyone? All the very best on your & the girls' night out ghost hunting. Ya make this brother-by-choice proud.

I gotta tell you, today I went on a road trip to the middle of nowhere and in a bookstore I found a DVD of a movie I never heard about--it stars, Sonny Bono and Farrah Fawcett. My goal is to see it tonight and review it for tomorrow. It's just too cool and campy!
