Witch-Themed Movies

As we ease into the awesome month of October, GHT will shift focus from how-to crafting and prepping for Halloween, to sitting back and enjoying the spooky season.

Here's my suggestions if you're in the mood for a witch-y marathon!

HOCUS POCUS
When a family moves to Salem, the kids accidentally unlock three witches of old who want to take their youth. Fantastic Halloween night family film. This really embodies Halloween night!

THE COVENANT

Four teenaged boys who have special powers have to fight a fifth who wants revenge. This one has a kicking soundtrack, real autumn feel, and tense.

PRACTICAL MAGIC

Two young women grow up with a curse on their lineage of witches that if they love a man, he will die. This has an amazing soundtrack, lush and beautiful, has a real spooky feel and romance.

THE CRAFT
Three high school outcast witches find their fourth when a new girl comes to town, but their powers may be too hard to control.

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE

An orphaned boy enters a school for sorcerers and learns about the evil that haunted his family. A very popular series of movies based on JK Rowling's books. A kid's delight (although adults love it too!)

RACE WITH THE DEVIL

Two couples rent an RV to go on a fun trek, only to witness a witchcraft sacrificial murder and now find themselves chased. This made-for-tv movie stars Peter Fonda and Loretta Swit.

BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE

This vintage movie involves a witch who makes the mistake of falling in love with a mortal and now must make a big decision. Starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. It is a romantic and moody work with an outdated message, but beautifully done.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
Three college kids decide to do a documentary on a witch legend in Maryland, only they get lost in the woods and appear to be falling into her clutches. This one has a very chilly, late autumn woods vibe. If you ever camped, this will get you.

THE WITCH

It is 1600s in New England and a family finds itself in a dilemma involving witchcraft and black magic.

THE WICKER MAN (1973)
A policeman goes to a Scottish island to find out about a missing girl and runs into a coven hiding secrets. This one is very atmospheric and intriguing.

BEWITCHED

This fun modern-day remake of the plot of the TV series has a woman with magical powers trying to fit in with a regular guy who falls for her. Lighthearted fun.

BLACK SUNDAY (1960)
A witch and her servant arise from the grave to try and capture the witch's beautiful descendant so she can move into her body.

THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK

When an interesting man comes to town, three women find their wishes come true with magical powers, but at a cost. Starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer.
