Why Are Ventriloquist Dolls So Creepy?

("Magic" 1978 movie with Anthony Hopkins--horrifying!)

Admit it, If you had to sit alone in a room with a ventriloquist doll, wouldn't you keep your eyes on it? You don't really know what the booger will do when you turn away. What if you turn back and he's not where he's supposed to be? What if he's crept up behind you, tapped on you shoulder? Said your name in that creepy little voice? Oh, you know the voice, nasally and childish, but spoken like a fussy old curmudgeon.

They speak for the ventiloquist--or do they?

If you want to freak out, go overkill on the ventriloquist phobia and immerse yourself in the movie, "Dead Silence" which I believe to be the best ventriloquist doll movie ever (although "Devil Doll" was very close).

Ventriloquist dolls speak through the ventriloquist, but they also say exactly what we're thinking which makes them outside of social constraints. It is unsettling to hear the truth from a piece of plastic. It expresses all the dark thoughts and angers of the one projecting his voice.

Perhaps it's from living with a ventriloquist doll for 7 years, but sometimes, you begin to wonder if you're resembling each other ....

Ventriloquist doll movies - (descriptions from IMDB)

Dead Silence A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.

Devil Doll An evil hyponotist/ventriloquist plots to gain an heiress' millions.

Magic A ventriloquist is at the mercy of his vicious dummy while he tries to renew a romance with his high school sweetheart.

The Dummy A newlywed couple visits a fortune teller just for laughs. The fun soon turns to terror after they insult the woman and leave without paying. The fortune teller then unleashes an evil spirit inside a creepy-looking ventriloquist doll that she commands to kill anybody who speaks to the couple on their first anniversary. The silent, murderous dummy kills without words, unlike the Chucky movies. A creepy, Italian-style independent horror movie that's fun and wicked with an unexpected ending.
