The Towns No One Wanted: Chaiten, Chile

Sometimes, nature decides where you should live and not you. Such was the case in Chaiten, Chile where a volcano erupting caused the town to be evacuated in 2008.

If that wasn't enough insult, there were earthquakes and flooding.

Covered in ash, flooded by a river, and unstable, the town was not salvageable.

Back and forth, back and forth, the government debated whether to rebuild the town elsewhere or not. In 2011, they decided to try to rebuild it in the same spot. Wow, given the trio of issues there, seems like a losing proposition, but time will tell.

  1. Very true. Nature decides. It's not wise to live near a volcano (lava), a river (flooding), a forest (fire), a sea (tzunami), a desert (famine).
