And you wondered if bigfoot existed in the vast northwest...

A tribe of hunter gatherers living in trees in the remote forests of Indonesia's easternmost Papua region has been discovered for the first time by the country's census, an official said on Thursday.

The nomadic tribe, called Koroway, numbers about 3,000 people speaking their own language and living off animals and plants in the forest, census officials found during the country's 2010 census survey.

"Their houses are in trees, their life is stone age," said Suntono, head of Indonesia's statistics agency for the Papua region, adding the tribe built ladders to huts in tall trees.

After receiving reports from missionaries, census officials needed to walk for up to two weeks to find the tribe, after travelling by boat from the nearest permanent villages, but still only reached the fringes of their territory.

  2. Hey Frog Queen;
    Glad you enjoyed it. I had to read it several times--was astounded that was possible. When I hear of these things, I think back to ancient man and how a catastrophe or war or horrible things could be happening in the world and he had no idea because he only knew his village's info. Nowadays, we have no clue what happens in our neighbhorhood, but we totally know what's happening around the globe. I'm not sure knowing awful things happening around the world in the news is really all that helpful. It makes venturing out in the world seem scary when we need more explorers.

  3. Cool post!
    Have you ever heard of Ishi? (just Google the name) He and his tribe lived undetected right under the noses of the white man for decades until he, the last of his people, was caught in town foraging for food. It's both an amazing and really sad story.

  4. Yeah, I remember being a kid in gradeschool when they'd show those films (yeah, I'm that old) of tribes that were discovered and I would cry. One time, I had to rush from the classroom. It bothered me so much. They live that way to not be found. I think about them taking photos of these folks and showing up in their gear and screwing with their minds. To them, life was the forest and each other. Now, it involves scary unknowns outside. I wouldn't like it aliens did that to us. Poor BF. He's a smart enough fella to stay hidden, unless for some reason he runs out of food and water. Then, the scenario I always imagined would come true--he'd be captured on a cell phone camera in someone's backyard pool in Spokane.

  5. Great article. Have to share that I saw a Bigfoot-like creature in Northern New Jersey...One night when we were out fishing, I was walking down the pathway, and it was standing right in front of us.

  6. This really makes you think about how little we really know about the world, despite all of our technology. I agree that these people are best left alone, they obviously have their own way of life and I hope that they are able to stay that way and not be bothered by "civilized" people. Thanks for the link to the article!

    I would defenitely like to hear more about Mary's bigfoot encounter, if she would care to share!

  7. Hey GHF;
    I would definitely like to hear it. I truly believe that BF is definitely intelligent enough and territorial enough to know his place and stay there. Good luck, BF. The scenario in which you are discovered and photographed is not so nice...

    At this point in my life, I want to live in places time has forgotten...the further the better. I could make a mountain hermit girl a hip thing...

    I gotta say that the more I ghost hunt and study this stuff and other paranormal things, the more I realize we have a lot more to discover than has been discovered, even if you don't consider space and the oceans...we are babes in the woods (or natives in the treetops) Maybe some day an advanced culture will come forward and say "hey, dudes, there's this universe out there--you might wanna poke your heads up and look"

  13. Ah, my Bigfoot encounter. Actually, it happened not far from my home. I was living in Sussex County, New Jersey. Plenty of woods in that area. I was about 18 years old when I and several of my friend decided to go night fishing. We'd been fishing at the pond for awhile, and my friend said she had to go to the bathroom, would one of us walk with her...so I agreed. So, we started down the dirt pathway...chatting away about guys...not paying much attention to anything. Then, she stopped suddenly, and grabbed my arm. There, standing in the middle of the path...may 7 or 8 feet away was this very tall black creature. For want of another name, we called it "The Big Black Skinny Thing." Need I say panic? We both screamed and hightailed it out of there as quickly as possible.

    The others laughed at us and said we were seeing things, but I knew differently. Still, it wasn't easy having no one believe you. Then, it was not even a week later when I was sitting in my house and heard lots of cars. I looked out my window and cars were all over the place...pulling over and stopping. Hundreds of people were getting out and walking in the direction of the woods. The next day the story of the sighting was in the paper. It seems the creature had stepped out onto the road and several people had seen and reported him. Sightings have been reported in that area since 1938 and are still being reported.

  14. Mary;
    That's an amazing and shivery description. It changes you, doesn't it? I know once you see something no logic can explain--the course of your life changes--hence, I hunt ghosts. Thanks for sharing that.

  15. I often wondered if there were tribes living in very remote areas in the world and now I know. Cool post and article!

  16. Thanks for sharing Mary. It's pretty cool that your experiences were validated by the experiences of others.

    I have no doubt that creatures like Bigfoot exist in the world, even though I have never personally had an encounter. However, I don't think that I am going to go hunting for a black creature any time soon! :)

  17. I think another thing something like this can remind us of is that the various eras of time in the history and so-called progression of society from stone age to the modern age still exist somewhere in the world. You still have hunter-gatherer societies, you still have farming societies, you still have Bedouin societies in the Middle East, as well as Amish style societies all still living in the world today.

  18. You're right, Jeff. As a culture, we need to make it possible for them to maintain their lives naturally as if there is threat of extinction.
