I haven't seen all the remakes of those movies but some like "When a Stranger Calls" didn't have that same frightening effect as the orginal.Julie Fergusonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10460274888229792456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-562032584293780619.post-28968901000669222832009-05-20T12:25:38.999-07:002009-05-20T12:25:38.999-07:00Yeah, there's something universal about "The Haunt...Yeah, there's something universal about "The Haunting." I was hoping in my novel I'm writing "The Thicket," to get that sense of terror in things that people sort of fear already like the woods. In "The Haunting" it was, "what if the house was a sentient thing?" In my novel it's kind of like "what if the woods were a sentient thing?" The original terror is from within. Sure, you put someone in a scary situation and it's scary, but it's really in how they handle being in that situation that you find real horror. That's probably why slashers don't work too well, except to gross us out. Most of the time, the person being killed is killed quite suddenly and there's no sense of horror in that. It's the moments of knowing you're going to die that are most horrifying. If they just took "The Haunting" and found a way to apply those elements into a horror story nowadays, it would be awesome. I thought "Dead Silence" got close. We can keep hoping. :-)Sharon Dayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13609356325356264202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-562032584293780619.post-91928676520850113412009-05-20T10:50:08.300-07:002009-05-20T10:50:08.300-07:00I dunno. The slapstick horror, cruddy special effects, and Catherine Zeta-Jones made me hide behind my hands the whole time. *bah dah chiiiing*

It seriously felt like they stomped all over my childhood with that remake. When I watched The Haunting for the first time at age 13 I cowered under the covers like a small child. Maybe it was because I watched it in my father's house, and that place itself was very much like Hill House, both in atmosphere and location.Celynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03434168982956403379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-562032584293780619.post-43571829786653084392009-05-20T10:26:32.837-07:002009-05-20T10:26:32.837-07:00Me too, The Haunting, did it for me. I did read "Exorcist" before I saw the movie and the book scared me more because I read it at home and thought I heard scratching in the attic... Yikes! The only movie that ever scared me so much I was hysterical about having to go home to my spooky house was "The Omen" (oh darn! Should have put the crappy remake on the list!) That movie really scared me most in the graveyard. I never liked the Freddie movies either because they might invade my dreams because I DON'T want them to and that means my subconscious will probably think I need to do it. I think what was so intriguing about the new 13 Ghosts, though it was horribly written and acted, was the ghosts themselves. I loved that they had stories behind them and were so very threatening and horrifying and the concept of them being let loose...I kept wishing they'd make a series of movies about each ghost so we could see how they came to be.Sharon Dayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13609356325356264202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-562032584293780619.post-40347192140713823582009-05-20T07:35:14.201-07:002009-05-20T07:35:14.201-07:00The original Thirteen Ghosts scared the hell out o...The original Thirteen Ghosts scared the hell out of me. I was eight years old and saw it the day it came out. It took months to get over that one. Sure, the newer one was high tech but when you're a kid the show is what it is.

I can't watch Freddie movies to this day because of similar things that go on in my life that resemble situations in those shows.

And, I saw the Exorcist the day it came out and had to leave because I couldn't breath or swallow - I was so scared. Of course I watch it today and laugh. What happened was that there were nuns standing outside the line at the show suggesting to people not to go see it. That set in my head of course so when things got scary I stopped breathing.

There was another movie that scared me really bad. I was no more than a 4th grader because I remember where I lived but it was about a piano player and his 'hand'. I remember it walking across the stage and I think it strangled someone. Really weird. Anyway, that movie caused me to wrap my blanket around my neck before I went to bed - every night. That probably went on for a year or more. Thinking about it when I got older I realized that I could have killed myself doing that - lol

I still like the Thirteen Ghosts original. I have it posted to if anyone wants to see it.

So essentially, I was 'that kid' that should not watch scary movies at a young age.

Thirteen GhostsAtrueoriginallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17754487232993372983noreply@blogger.com
