1950s SciFi Movie Remakes

Today is 1950s SciFi day here and at my favorite SciFi blog Attention Earthlings! Enjoy our posts today and hope they get you in the mood for the classics. My earlier post today dealt with the typical female leads in such movies.

The Thing

This gory remake by John Carpenter starring Kurt Russell was much edgier than the original. Camps are divided about which one was better, but true SciFi fans give the original two thumbs up and horror fans give the 1982 remake a double thumbs up.

War of the Worlds

One thing we learn about remakes of 50s SciFi movies is that you better have an epic director and a big box office hero. This 2005 remake directed by Spielberg starred Tom Cruise. It was a horror lover's delight but science fiction fans felt it missed the mark.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

This 2008 remake starred Keanu Reeves and pretty much missed the feel of a science fiction movie and came across more as a really bad spy story.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

This unsettling remake from 1978 was a darker and scarier version of the original. Most people would say that Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum and Brooke Adams gave it the edge it needed.

Invaders From Mars

This 1986 remake was directed by Tobe Hooper and starred Karen Black. Camps were divided about is remake, but it was well received.
