Horror Contest Reminder!

I’ve been planning as a Valentine’s treat for my followers, to have a writer’s contest on my blog. This one will and won’t make you sweat. It won’t make you sweat about how to write something in this period of time because it’s a “flash” short story (500 words or less). The part that will make you sweat is trying to convey a moment in horror in such a short amount of words.

The purpose of this is to teach you editing and the use of senses, adjectives, and mood to get tension going. Don’t worry about beginning, middle, and end. This could simply be a floating moment in time if you like. For example, a woman is trapped in a cave-in and something else is in the void with her but she has no light to see what it is.

Prize:
The book “The Haunting of Hill House” and the DVD “The Haunting” based on the book OR “Let the Right One In” book and DVD (winner gets to choose which set)

Here’s the rules:
You have to be a follower
You get only one entry
Continental US only
Deadline ends February 14th midnight (MST)
Winner announced on Valentine’s Day on my blog and will be showcased on the blog that day with link to your blog if you have one.

Here’s the task:
Any horror subject you want
Any point of view you desire
Must be 500 words or less (yes, very short!)

How to submit it:
Anytime from now until February 14th midnight (12 am MST) email the entry to
Psychic62@hotmail.com and just tell me it’s your entry.

Bonus: With the author’s permission, I will showcase the entries on my blog with a link to their blog. Let me know if you'd like me to do this because if you are protective of your work, I'll delete it once it's read and judged so you don't have to worry about it floating on Internet space. I’d like to help others who read my blog to learn about the talented folks who follow my blog, so they can start following your blogs and we can be one big family.

Since I've been posting the "Writer's Workshop" series, I also have no problem at all if you'd like to include your submittal as a published work for your resume once it's been showcased on here as an honorable mention. You can refer to it as the 2010 Ghost Hunting Theories Horror Flash Story Contest

  1. Oh this sounds like spoky fun! I wish I had the time to do this. I forgot how to write after college I think it would be a mess of horrific grammer. Oh and the ghost I'd like to haunt me is Jim Morrison! :)

  2. Jim Morrison, huh? I don't even have to bat an eye--I'd choose Rex Harrison as the sea captain from the 1947 movie, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." He is my idol in the ghost world! If he lived in my house, I'd probably never leave.

  3. I should have time to finish writing mine this weekend.
